HELP!!! Crazy compressor idea.
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 14, 2005 4:45 AM
i've been tryin to get rid of an old 1-door fridge of mine for a dirt cheap amount (less than USD30) and having a lot of problem with that. Then I read from the forum that there's a compressor in the fridge, so I figured since I'm trying to save money for a compressor and an airbrush why not try it? Especially since compressors in the market costs about USD100 (without moisture trap, etc).

Now my question will be, is it possible for that compressor to be removed and is it easy? Not planning to do it myself but most likely look for some electrical spare parts technician who may not their way around one. Just that if it's simple task, I can estimate how much they'll charge. And if it's not possible to remove it...end of story. Anybody has any ideas????

oh yeah...forgot this important thing...Is it save????

I know it can be done but that's about the extent of my knowledge. There used to be someone around here who used an airbrush compressor made from a refrigerator compressor and it worked fine. Completely silent and all the air he needed. I can't recall who it was though.

I would certainly consult someone who knows what they are doing. If for no other reason that in the US it's illegal to allow some refrigerants to escape into the atmosphere. Besides that, you sure don't want it escaping into your face.

it will cost you more to have the compressor evacuated, than to spend money ona proper AB compressor. Unless you can DIY, it's not going to be cheaper.

Hey Dave-think about an air tank (like a propne tank), with a moisture trap and pressure regulator. You can find the tanks at welding supply shops.
