Do all NMF benefit from or indeed require a gloss black undercoat for best effect or is that just an Alclad thing? I plan on using Model masters metallic enamel (not the buffable metaliser) on the Su-7s and would prefer to prime just with my standard "grey" primer. What do you think. Thanks in advance.

Hi Simon,

long time...well I have just finished a P-38 (just the painting) and I must tell you that the gloss black primer (I used the testors/model master gloss black), gives a nice touch. I have buffed the plane with "miracle Shine" nail polishing boards bought at the chemists' and I couldn't believe my eyes that plastic can actually shine like a mirror. I have used the black under the testors paints and also under alclad, both with good results.

By the way, the IWATA sprays magnificently, I sprayed the whole P-38 with it.

All the best and regards

Gb

P.S. real nice Lancaster!!!

hello Mr. Simon! as far as the gloss black primer, the only metalizers that alclad recommends using the gloss black under is polished aluminum or chrome. gloss black base is imperitive for those two metalizers to come out right. the grey primer you mention will do fine for the MM metal enamel. one tip though, DO NOT MASK MM METALIZERS!!!! a knat fart will lift MM metalizers friend, so you must be careful!! you kinda have to think backwards when fooling with MM metalizers, spray you painted areas first, then mask them off, then apply the primer and metalizer.

that is why i'm sold on alclad products. there very durable, don't really need a sealer but i do anyway, and you can mask them when cured!
