Help with metalizer
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 8:41 AM
I'm using Model Master spray on metalizer and sealer to paint a P-47, but want to know if I can mask and paint the Green glare stripe on the metalizer/sealer, or do I have to mask it seprately so they both won't touch. I know the metalizer won't stick to anything but plain plastic, but I want to make this as simple as I can

I guess I don't understand the question properly. Metallizers adhere just fine to other paints, in fact they stick a bit better than they do on plain bare plastic.

I believe the question he is asking is can MM metalizers be masked safely. My experience with MM metalizer is no it will lift even with the lowest tac frisket films. So what you need to do is mask the for the anti glare strip and paint it then mask over it and apply the MM metalizer.

Actually, I sprayed a practice model with MM metalizer, and with Tamiya tape that I reduced the tack of I found I could lightly mask metalizer just fine without it lifting.

Lighly mask without lifting? This won't do for an anti glare panel. MM Metalizers are notorious for lifting, even when sealer is applied. Hence, the popularity of Alclad products. Some choose to apply Future and wait a few days for a good cure, then mask away with no worries. Unfortunately, future application will take away from the metallic effect of the paint somewhat, not that this is always a bad thing.

OK, I took reduced tack Tamiya masking tape, and burnished it down with my burnishing tool. (Like I would for an anti-glare panel). Still nothing. No lifting at all. I saw a few silver specks on the tape, but no visible effects on the paint at all. Is this unusual?
