You should also test that primer on a scrap piece of plastic, too. Preferably a piece of " tree " from your model kit. Some of those general purpose primers will soften/bubble plastic.

That primer should work fine. Probably better than most modeling primers. To be sure try it on some of the fret material that the PE parts are mounted on. or the back end of the barrel that won't be visible after it is mounted.

I am approaching the painting stages of a Tamiya's Sd.Kfz.222 and it includes photo-etched parts and an alumininum gun barrel. Is it Ok to prime these parts with a general metalprimer purchased from a hardware store or should the hobby metalizer only be used? My stuff is called super primer and can be used on metal, timber and masonary surfaces is light grey in colour and comes in a spray can. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.
