Thx to my Airbrush i have the F-18C Cheetah!

I just got done painting tamiya sky grey onto my F-18C on the top.......i made even passes........held the brush close to the model........gentle air pressure.....thinned the paint 50/50 with water (too cheap to go buy the thinner) and what do i get at the end of this!? Some parts of my model look fabulous and nice........then others.........other parts have like a million tiny lighter colored spots........then there are patches that are lighter and patches that are darker........its not one continuous coat......its one continous cheetah!

can anyone see the error of my ways?

My one experience with using water for thinner in Tamiya paint resulted in a similar finish. I think some people use water with good success but it didn't work for me. I got little water droplets on the surface that, when dry, left light spots like you are seeing. Water works fine with some acrylics, specifically PollyScale which says right on the bottle to thin it with water, but I didn't have good luck using it with Tamiya or Model Master.

I've had the same problem, now I stick to good old Tamiya thinner. In the big 750ml bottle it is only $7.50 and a bottle lasts about a yr (or 8 models which is about what I built this yr) The little 30ml bottle is ridiculously expensive at $5.50 and it only lasts a model or two!!!

You can order it online at www.greatmodels.com and www.squadron.com if your LHS doesn't stock the big bottle...

Rubbing alcohol is also my primary thinner for acrylics. I use it with Model Master, Tamiya, and Citadel with excellent results. Two things to keep in mind though:

1) It evaporates quickly and tends to make the fast-drying problem of acrylics even worse. I usually add a couple of drops of acrylic retarder to my paint cup to slow the drying time down.

2) With most Tamiya gloss paints it will cause them to dry flat.

Other than that it works great. You can also use automotive windshield washer fluid. I haven't tried that but I understand it works quite well.
