Tamiya TS-17 replacement
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 4:46 AM
Hello.

I am building Road Star byke from Tamiya and the spec calls to use gloss aluminium (TS-17 if I am not wrong). At some builder's page I read that he used NBA (non-buffing aluminium) metallizer by Model master. I have Aluminium Plate and tried it, but it doesn't look as shiny as I would expect. Does anyone know what I can mix into NBA to achieve the effect?

Hi There,

I wouldn't mix anything into those metalizers paints, if you need it to be real shiny, try the buffing metalizer. the best results are given when the part to be painted is first primed gloss black (model master/testors) and then the metalizer applied in several thin coates. After that, allow to dry for a day and then rub the paint with a clean lint free cloth until it shines. Remember to apply a coat of Sealer for Metalizer or the paint will rub off on your hands.

Hope this is of help, regards

Apply gloss black is meant for Alcad paints and has little to no effect with MM Metalizers. MM Aluminum Plate should be buffed an hour after it has dried, and no sealer has been applied. Make sure to buff in circular motion using a clean cotton cloth. MM Aluminum (Buffing) is another option, but won't come out as shiny as aluminum plate.

What are you using the Gloss Aluminum for? I don't know of any part that would stay shiny very long that would be made out of aluminum. If you really want a shiny aluminum then I suggest you use SnJ Aluminum, but it is a difficult and very expensive process. Alcad Polished Aluminum is another way, but $7 a 1oz bottle.
