Matt Cote which one?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, August 18, 2005 8:07 PM
Hi all!

I normally use Humbrol Matt Cote and, although it has a very good matt finish it never dries properly. Could it be a problem with the thinning ratio or the thinner? I use Humbrols thinner 50/50.
I#8217;ve tried Testors Dull Cote (in a spray can) on my Mig25 over Gunze Sangyo Aqueous and it was a disaster, the finish wasn#8217;t uniform with patches of dark in some areas.
Also other brands didn#8217;t dry matt, more like satin.
Any tips???
Thanks!

I've tried both Vallejo and Floquil dull finishes and been greatly pleased with both. Often it is good to put a gloss coat underneath the dull coat to provide a uniform surface for the dulling agent to cover. This eliminates patches of some paint appearing flatter than others and protects the paint and decals fromt he dull coat if it is a lacquer (like Testors)

I've never had to thin a dull coat, perhaps that might have led to what happened as well.

Good luck!!!

Coming in a spray can the Krylon Matte Finish 1311, from a local arts and crafts store, works fast and has a durable matte coat. The large 11 oz. can is very inexpensive and you'll be using the can forever.

I use Testors dull coat or MM acrylic flat and have had good results. I don't like Polly Scale because every time I have used it, it has dried white.

I use Gunze Sangyo Aqeous Clear Flat through the AB. Perfect, dead-flat finish every time, no problems over any type of paint.

Many years ago a friend put me on to the MicroScale products: MicroGloss and MicroFlat. I've never used anything else since. Water based, it can be brushed on very easily without thinning, or airbrushed when thinned with ordinary water. Either way my results have been fantastic.

I had same problem a couple of times with Testors Dull cote in the rattlecan. However no problems at all over any type of paint with it in the airbrush thinned about 50/50 with lacquer thinner. You have lots of other options though.
