To Prime......or Not to Prime.....that is the question?
Posted by IceDragon122 on Friday, August 19, 2005 11:32 PM
Well I use Tamiya Gray Primer in a rattle can......and am not liking the results......

I was wondering if i could use Model Master Primer and use an airbrush.....to get more control.....and if it is possible to use Model Master....

What do i thin it with? and can it go underneath a layer of acrylic paint. (meaning I prime the model then airbrush over it Tamiya Acrylics)

Can anyone lend me thier keys of advice?

Sorry to hear about your results. What kind of results are you getting?

I have used different primers, from MM Custom Lacquer Gray Primer to MM Acryl primer. So far I have achieved some postive results. All I use for painting purposes is acrylic paints and I have had no trouble when I spray over the primer. As for thinning I do not need to. I get good results.

Over the years, I've had very good luck with standard automotive grey paint in a spray can. With a little practice, you can get a good covering without obliturating the small details. Just make sure it's enamel primer, not laquer. It's cheaper than modeling primers (let's see you prime a dozen or so 1/72 aircraft out of that little can of modeling primer). I live in a town of 3,000 and can get auto primer in the hardware store, lumber yard, dime store and the $1 General Store in grey, black and red. Give it a try.

Does anyone know what Tamiya's grey primer is? Lacquer? Enamel? Acrylic?

It's enamel...

I use Krylon white or Tamiya grey for my priming, used MM before but figured out Acrylic on top of acrylic might not be enough of a bond... I am sure they make an enamel one as well but only seen acrylic here...

How bad are the fumes from Tamiya grey primer aerosol?

Very bad fumes, I thought it is lacquer not enamel. I've got floquil enamel grey primer and thinner to try in my AB, you should get a much better coverage priming with the AB especially in those difficult to reach bits.
