when to use oil washes??
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 5, 2005 10:29 PM
Hi all you modeling maniacsWink [;)],
Using acrylics for the first time, also have never used artist's oil paints in the tubes, but am going to on this model, how soon after I have painted the model may I use the oil wash? I have a can of Turpeniod to use as the thinner.
Thanks,
Bill

If Turpeniod is anything like turpentine, my advice about the time frame to wash would be never. I did a turpentine wash on a tank after letting dry a day or so, as I recall, and it crazed and lifted the underlying paint in several places. With regular thinner based washes, I usually wait a day or so.

Bill, when using any sort of wash make sure you give your model a couple of good coats of a clear gloss coat (such as Future floor polish) and let that cure for at least a day before applying the wash. The Future will protect your lovely paint job from the weathering you about to do as well as helping it to flow a lot better.

OK, your questions how soon can you apply it after painting, well depending on the weather conditions I would give it at least a couple of days before applying the clear coat. Turpenoid makes excellent thinner for artists oils, just mix it in a pallet to about the consistency of coffee.

Cheers

Thanks alot Darson, sounds real good to me!Approve [^]
Abarne, thx for the warning, Turpenoid is a "safer" form of turpentine from everything I have read and heard. It is alot milder and oderless so, I will do as Darson and you say, wait a couple of days then go for it.
