Favorite Metallic Finish
Posted by billc3207 on Monday, September 12, 2005 11:15 AM
Let me open up a can of worms and ask what is your favorite metallic finish. I model nothing but WWII US aircraft so keep that in mind. I tried SNJ several years ago and it gave a nice but less than great results. I was hoping for more of a realistic metal finish. I also recall that putting on decals on the base coat was not much of a problem but the aluminum buffing powder got into the recessed panel lines on the decals and was difficult to remove. It even stuck to some of the decals and would not come off very easily. I would appreciate your comments.

Hands down it is Alclad2 for me. www.alclad2.com has pics of what their product can do. It really works great, is easy to put on and doesn't need a sealer like some of the other NMF's.

They have application instructions on the site and I recommend following how they recommend to put it on. I did it my way the first time with so so results, and the second time I used their way and was really happy with the outcome!

I recently used bare metal foil for the first time. Hands Down Amazing! It's very forgiving when trying to weather over decals. and easy to use. Admittedly I was building a post WW2 jet, but I would be thrilled to use it on any model that calls for a metal finish. Good luck!

I've used a few and I found that nothing beats Alclad II for both finish and durability.

I have to agree that i do like the look that Alclad gives a model, but I found out the hard way that their polished aluminum color CANNOT be taped off without peeling...that was a bummer of a lesson Black Eye [B)]

I like to use SnJ, Alcad, and Metalizers. Metalizer aluminum, isn't that great, but they offer many other helpful colors such as gun metal, titanium, burnt metal, and burnt iron which produce great looking finishes.

My favorite brushable metallic finish is Humbrol. Humbrol is easy to apply and usually only needs one coat. I also like MM, but some colors like chrome silver and aluminum aren't that easy to apply.
