campbell-hausfeld compressor noise
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 15, 2005 10:23 PM
I'm just wondering - Walmart has a 2gal C-H compressor for 69 bucks, and was wanting to know if anyone has experience with the noise level of such a thing - say, as compared to a Badger 180-11, which I've used. When I was a kid, my dad made me a compressor / tank out of an old freezer compressor and a freon bottle, but that compressor is long gone..

fizzwater2: I would avoid these compressors like the plague. I know. I went through 2 of these until I got smart. Even though I was only giving these compressors moderate use, the motors just didn't hold up. There are too many other good choices out there to have to settle on a CH product. I know there are several posts on this forum which can probably steer you in the right direction. I bought an Iwata Sprint Jet compressor and have been very happy with it.

I got my compressor at Lowes and have had it for awhile now and couldn't be happier with it. The noise is about like a vacuum or blender. But it only kicks on every so oftren so it's not continuous... I think I paid about $70 for mine. I do know several people here who own the Campbell-Hausfield compressors and they seem to like them as well.

If you are willing to spend a little more and price is a little flexible, www.badger-airbrush.com has the Thayer and Chandler Air Star V for $99 refurbished with a 6 month warranty. That would be somewhat quieter than the industrial type...

My C-H compressor has given me several years of faithful service ... but, my wife and children have to speak louder at the dinner table these days ... Wink [;)] ... 'cause ... man is it loud when she kicks on to fill the tank ... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

And ... No, I don't really think that I have hearing loss ... but, it is loud ... but, works good.

to all, thanks - tho9900, does that T&C compressor have a tank, or is it just a compressor and regulator? It's hard to tell from the photos I've seen of it.

Thanks!

no, no tank that I can tell.. pretty much any hobby compressor that you buy with a tank on it is going to cost you a little more. I think the D-3000 by Paasche is reasonable though. It is $169.00 with a 2 gal tank...

of course you could probably figure a way to attach a tank between the compressor and the brush... I'm sure someone here has done it or seen it done...

Some Saturday morning, run up to Olathe and head north on 7 hiway. About a mile or mile and a half before 7 crosses I-70 you will come to a stop light. On the southwest corner of that stop light there is a mini-mall and in the southwest corner of that mini-mall, you will see a larger building with the sign Cummins Tools on it. They have all types of air compressors ranging in size from the small hobby type to 25hp comps mounted on 120 gallon vertical tanks and the prices are very reasonable. Plus they have all types of neat tools and things.
