Painting ABS Plastic
Posted by wm_brant on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 12:29 PM
I need to build a wing for a model car - a slotcar, to be specific.

Because this wing is going to take some abuse, I was thinking I should construct the wing out of something stronger than the usual styrene plastic, and so I am considering making it out of ABS plastic from Plastruct.

I think I have a handle on the the necessary ABS adhesives, but I've not found a lot of information on how to paint ABS plastic. What I have found seems to suggest that I buy an automotive 'flexible bumper' primer, and start with that.

I had been planning on repainting the car (which is styrene, I believe) with a few coats of airbrushed acrylic paint. Do you think I could I apply the acrylic paint over the flexible bumper primer and get a decent job?

In any case, I'm open to suggestions...

I have built Gundam modeles which contain ABS. ABS can easily be painted with enamels. You might need a primer for using acrylics, but I don't use acrylics. Make sure you wash the ABS prior to painting.

ABS paints as easily a styrene. Make sure the surface is clean and then prime and paint as usual.
