Primer question?
Posted by Hocking on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 9:59 PM
I am just getting started into modeling, and I am a little confused as to what type of products to use to finish mainly ship models (VIIC 1/72 UBoat, 1/350 Tamiya Missouri, Bismarck, and Tirpitz, ect....). I will be airbrushing these models with enamel paints manufactured by White Ensign Models enamel paints. I quess I am a little confused on what to use as a primer on these models, and what to use for a protective/decal coating on the final finished product (Future, Clear Flats, a combo of both, ect...).

Here are some of my questions:
1) What type of Primer should I use? Acrylic primer? A certain kind of enamel primer? A laquer primer?
2) Any suggestion on what type of primer from question number 1 that I can buy in large quantities for cheap? I know I hear alot of people talking about using automotive primers, and other primers that can be purchased quite a bit cheaper than a modeler's 1/2 ounce bottle of modeling primer.
3) Should I use Future on ship models? Would I use it for the decaling only? Or, would I use it as a protective coat over the entire ship? I guess I don't want my ships to be too glossy looking.
4) Should I use some type of Clear Flat protective coating rather than a glossy coating of Future? If so, what kind should I look into buying? Or, should I mix a clear flat paint with Future to get a combination of both for a final protective coating?

Thanks for any suggestions that you can give me. Feel free to give me any other advise you see fit that deals with this area of modeling as well. It is definitely appreciated.

1) I normally use a Lacquer based primer like Tamiya or as I noted on my resent post I have been using Rust-Oleum Primer with good results. For me the Lacquer based primer tends to grab the Acrylic paints better and tends to wet sand nicely.

2) As mentioned the Rust-Oleum is appx. $4.50 US for 12 oz. The other option if you have an airbush is to buy the Testors primer in a bottle and cut it with Lacquer to your preference.

3) I use Future only if I am going to have to apply decals. Other wise I just put some future with a flat base to satin it a bit. I guess this would be more of a personal preferrence.

4) As I mentioned for ? 3, you can mix a little tamiya flat with the future but only a little, on one of the post someone mentioned 1 part flat to 4 parts future, but suggest expermenting to see what you like. But remember too much flat will make your model look like you sprayed chalk onto it.
You can also airbrush Testers flat cut with a little lacquer or spray it from a can, but I normally don't trust clear coats out of the can, had bad experiances with cans before.

Hope this helps.

1)hobby is right you should use a lacquer based primer

2)You can get a fairly large can of Games-Workshop primer that is very good and should last you quite a while

3)like hobby said you can use future or a spray can gloss cote of some kind but it' s all personal prefernce

4)clear coats from the can should be ok as long as you follow the instructions carefully

theres my opinionBig Smile [:D]
