Paint/Finish compatablity

First of all, I would like to thank all of you who have so kindly responded to my previous postings. So refreshing to find such a kind community of people!
I am just getting back into the hobby, so I hope you can all bear with me as I have a couple of hundred questions about this 'new age' of modeling. I try to do as much research on my own before going into this forum, but I would rather spend that time building.
Has anyone created (or can anyone link me to) a guide to paint/clear-coat compatabilities, and maybe a guide to thinners used for each particular medium? I am an avid reader of FSM and see how so many different finishes and in-between coats are used. I know that you cannot put lacquers over most other medium, but what about varnishes and acrylics as applied over other finishes. (And what is up with Future floor polish? Is it's basic chemical makeup just an acrylic?) Also, I read in the articles about how a coat of gloss is applied before applying decals, and while I understand the reason behind this, why shoot flat colors, then gloss, then flat again? Don't all these applications just fill up the recessed panel lines and result in a loss of overall detail? One more thing while I'm here. Has anyone experienced any problems with long term fading or yellowing with a particular final coat (espc. that Future thing)? Thanks, Stinger
