Airbrushing aluminium?
Posted by abutt2 on Saturday, October 15, 2005 10:27 AM
My new AFV 88mm Antiaircraft gun kit has a beautiful turned aluminum barrel. I normally airbrush with Tamiya acrylics, and would really like to stay with acrylics. All my cleaning procedures are geared to water base clean up. Do you think that'll work on metal? Or should I just go ahead and try it.

Maybe priming it with an enamel spray can paint as a baseQuestion [?]

If it were me I would use automotive primer on it. That primer is designed to adhere very well to metal, and the acrylic will then adhere very well to it. I've used acrylic on bare metal before and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Just seems to depend on the metal and the paint used.

Mr Surfacer 1000 or 1200 should do you straight. Thin with laquer thinner for the airbrush. Auto primer, as mentioned above is excellent. I would just make sure it is sandable (not all are), so you can smooth out the spray can finish with some 2000 grit.
