Airbrushing Future
Posted by king.45 on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 2:18 PM
I just put the decals on my P-47D and have given them 48 hours to cure. The next step is to seal the airplane with a coat of Future but my question is this.
Do you thin the Future with something like thinner or nothing at all? And after I am finished coating the airplane what do i use to clean the airbrush? If it helps I have a paasche airbrush.
If anyone can help thanks in advance.

I usually shoot future straight from the bottle with no thinning. I clean my airbrush with either alcohol or ammonia. A lot of people use Windex for cleaning as well.

i thin future with isopropyl alcohol.but thats just me. some people use it too, helps the future to spread more on my model. i use windex to cleanup, then followed by water. till the stickyness of the water being sprayed on by the brush vanishes.. i use 4 parts future to 1 part alcohol.Happy modeling!

I thin mine with Tamiya Acrylic thinner... which is mostly alcohol with a retarder in it I believe... same reason, my coat goes on smoother... a lot of people just shoot it straight from the bottle with wonderful results though so maybe wait and hear some thoughts on both sides before you decide what might be best for you... in fact maybe trying it on junk plastic one way then the next would give you a feel for which you prefer...

good luck!

I spray it unthinned with no problem. Clean up with any solution that contains Ammonia, such as the original "blue" Windex.

I used to shoot several light mist coats straight from the bottle, but had trouble with sometimes getting a "grainy" surface.

Switched to thinning 4:1 with Windex, I find that it goes on much smoother. 3-4 light coats 15 min or so apart. Final step is to shoot a mist coat of pure Windex, this levels the surface some more.

Windex clean up.

Any glass cleaner with ammonia will work! Windex is just a well known name, like Hoover or Kleenex.

When i told him what is for he looked at me though i was stupid or something lol "Ammonia for cleaning an airbrush! shouldnt u goto a model shop" explaining things to people can be frustrating...

Anyways, u know if this windolene is any good for cleaning up Future/Klear?? Maker is Reckitt Benckiser or Reckitt & Coleman...

Sasarchiver,

Yes, thinning with windex works for me. There are also others using it with success:

Try it on some painted scrap plastic, you might like it...

Sasarchiver,

It should say "ammonia" on the bottle. I haven't seen any window cleaners in Canada that don't have ammonia in them. You can also buy non sudsing ammonia at the supermarket or hardware store (same place as laundry cleaners) and dilute it with plain water. It's the ammonia that does the cleaning. Windex (or Windolene) is just a convenient way to buy it pre-diluted. I also like that it's blue, makes it easy to see.

So long folks!
