what's wrong with my paint

Dead [xx(]Im about ready to give up modeling due to airbrush problems. The latest 2 problems were with Testors Acrylic thinner. First I used it in Gunze Sangyo gloss paint-looked great but hadn't dryed in 4 days! After literally wiping the paint off with alcohol I repainted with Gunze thinned with pure denatured alcohol-that worked much better-cured in about 3 days. What does everybody use to thin Gunze gloss paint? Problem 2- I painted with Tamiya gloss white and let it dry at least a week. even fine sanded it to a smooth finish. As usual I painted flat black (anti-glare and nose cone) with testors flat black acrylic thinned with pure testors acryl thinner. The paint immediately turned into spider crackle finish like the desert floor! Is this not compatable, or was gloss white to smooth for paint to grip? Certainly the white had cured after 4 days. Sometimes I think acyrlic paint and gloss coats will be the end of the hobby!

Cracking like that is usually caused by the paint drying too quickly or by the underlying paint expanding or contracting which can cause the overcoats to crack. Since you said it "Immediately" began to crack I suspect the former. Try adding a few drops of acrylic retarder to your paint and see if that helps. It is available at most art supply stores and is pretty inexpensive. It will dramatically slow down the drying time of acrylic and eliminate a lot of problems associated with them.

Kepi, Gunze-Sangyo acrylics are best used with water, preferably distilled. when you have your thinned paint add some Mr.Retarder to your mix. this is the best combo for me. Gunze does not work well with other thinning products that i know of. use this technique and keep me postefd on the results.

thanks for the replies. I will try the retarder in the black acrylic. I actually used it in the Gunze Sangyo once, It blushed and never cured, but I have used it in testors. When i say it "immediately" cracked like dry mud, i mean like on the first pass of the airbrush, and got worse with wet coats! letting it cure so i can sand it and try again. will let you know how it works.

I had that problem going from Tamiya paints to the G.S. I've found that a couple of drops of water work better than thinner, and try going a little lighter on the coats, put some distance between the kit and the airbrush.
