Would this air tank work?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 3:58 PM
Hi everyone.

I've been reading the forums looking for info on compressors / air tanks before I run out and spend any money on one. My father actually has this 10 gallon air tank. Could this be used for airbrushing ? (I'm a beginner) If so, what would I need to add to this in addition to a regulator to make it work.

Also, given it's 10 gallon size, and 125 psi, how many 1/48 scale airplanes could I expect to get out of this tank before it would need to be filled again?

What "CONS" would be associated with using a tank of this nature. I know this may not be the ideal solution, but it's free :)

You could maybe get through 1 1/48 at most...depending on your spraying habits.
Cons, you will have to fill it up somehwere and you will most likely need a smaller scale regulator as these babies come with ones that are not readable at smaller incremements.

A moisture trap would help, though might not be that critical. They're pretty cheap, I bought mine for $10 CDN.

The only disadvantage is that they run out of air fairly quickly (3-4 models +/-), so you will be going back and forth quite a bit filling it. They are absolutely silent, except for the hiss of air, they don't make any noise.

So long folks!

Usually suppled air is moisture-free but a trap wouldn't hurt. Although a supplier may offer a good rental deal on a larger cylinder. Just secure it in place!

I've used one of those for a few years without the regulator or trap (and not without error at first, I second the aforementioned recommendations) with an old Badger single action. Walmart has a compressor w/tank for around $70 that works great. All you'd need to add to it is a water trap. It's worth the investment if you airbrush regularly (or have to air up the kid's bike tires).
