Flat Base/ Future is kinda cloudy.

I sealed a model with a 3:1 mix of Future to Flat Base last night, as per the Complete Future article. I think it said this would be "very flat".

The end result was to make the colors almost grey-out a bit or get a little cloudy. It's only really noticeable on the darkest color, a black/brown, but there's quite a bit of it on the model.

My question is, is this what "very flat" looks like or did something go funky?

And I know I saw a thread on here about someone having a similar problem and fixing it with another coat of something, but I can't find that thread. So for a second question, any advice for how to maybe de-flatten my colors a bit?

Too much XF-21 in the mix. I never go below 4:1 because of that, and always recommend that it be tried on some scrap to make sure it looks right.

I tried it on a junk mini first and didn't notice it, but it didn't have much of the black/brown on it. I'll just have to tweak a little more.

And I got my colors back to normal by hitting it with a couple of light coats of Testor's spray Gloss Cote. I guess more Future would also do the same thing? But now I'm back to needeing the matte finishSigh [sigh]. By the time I get done sealing this mini it's gonna be indestructible.

I'll second MusicCity. I use Tamiya Flat and Future but at a ratio of 4 parts Future to one part Flat base, and it gives a nice flat finish without clouding things. I wouldn't worry too much about the number of clear layers you have. I have a couple of kits in my collection that have many clear layers, but you can't tell just by looking at them.

You could always spray a cloth with some windex and wipe off the cloudy future. It'll take some work to get it all evenenly off and watch out for decals and weathering if you go too deep.

Why do peolple insist on using this trash when there are many acrylic clear flats that don't need to be mixed with Future at a precise level to get a perfectly flat finish? The one thing I learned from my short stint in insurance sales was K.I.S.S., Keep It Simple, Stupid. One product to do the job of a carefully mixed combination of two others.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Show me another product that allows you to adjust the level of matte finish and I might consider it. Using Future and XF-21 I can get anything I want from dead flat to glossy or anywhere in between.
