New airbrush question for experts
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 1, 2005 7:57 PM
I currently have a Paasche VL airbrush and am about ready to purchase another airbrush. I am looking seriously at an Iwata HP CS. I use the airbrush primarily for WW2 aircraft and space/rocket kits. My question for the airbrush experts is, is this a good choice for fine (camouflage) type painting and general purpose as well? I have used the VL for some of this with results ranging from rather good to not too good. I still need a lot of practice. Any suggestions on this are appreciated. Thanks.

Robert - the HP-CS is a good brush I have heard from those who own it... I own the HP-CR and LOVE it!!! I think you would be ok with using the HP-CS as long as you don't get rid of the VL right away. To me there is no one brush that can do it all. I have 3 airbrushes and currently use 2 of them a lot, the HP-CR does about 90% of my painting, but the Badger 175 does the rest (large coverage and certain acrylics) ... you might find the dual airbrush thing is what you need.

That said, I have seen many fine modelers here use the CS for everything. I imagine in time I will learn the CR enough to be able to do that too.

Question for you, do you shoot mostly enamel or acrylics? I know one user here who was an excellent modeler and used the CS but was thinking of a CR for acrylics... it can do very fine lines as well (not as fine as the CS but very fine all the same), and handle the larger pigments of acrylics better.

To some extent you have answered your own question. You are getting inconsistent results with your Paasche VL because you are inexperience. This is not surprising because it does take a while to master to use of an airbrush. If you buy an HP-CS, you will probably get the same inconsistent results with it as you do with the Paasche. After you get more air-brushing time under belt, your results whether from a Paasche VL, HP-CS, or any other kind of air brush will improve. My suggestion would be to master your Paasche. Once you are able to consistently get good results from it, you'll be in a better position to evaluate whether or not to get another airbrush and evaluate the pros and cons of the availabe choices.

The Tamiya HG SUPERFINE Airbrush is great for camo, especially the 1:72 scale. i think Tamiya made that airbrush for that sole purpose. it's nozzle is just .2 mm!
