Metalizer is a laquer, and not a enamel, and it will work better over bare plastic, like mentioned. If you do use it over other paints, like also mentioned, VERY light coats, and try it brfore using it on a pet project.

I have found from personal experience that Metallizer doesn't work well over other paints--acrylic or enamel. The effect from the buffing types is especially reduced. The Metalllizer line, I believe, is primarily designed to be used on bare plastic. If the plastic is polished beforehand, the Metallizer effect increases. Metallizer MIGHT work if the paint or clear coat is a high gloss and rubbed out to where any surface defects are eliminated, or certainly minimized.

I really think that you shouldn't have any problems with metalizer over enamels or acrylics. You only need the thinnest of coats and the paint dries so fast that there isn't time for the metalizer to eat into the enamel or acrylic paints.
I've never had the metalizer eat any other paint, but then again, I've used it for years and I'm used to it. You really only need super thin coats to get full color from the metalizer range. You don't even need to thin it to spray.
If you REALLY dumped the metalizer on. I'd imagine the reducers in the metalizer would eat into the underlying coat.
I ALWAYS advocate the age old tactic of EXPERIMENTATION before you commit yourself to action that might result in a big mistake. Always test BEFORE you try it. It's easy - just paint any old thing with your enamel at the same time you are painting your bits for the model - then you have the SAME paint to test with. Get it?

Testors Metalizers Over Enamels
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, July 21, 2003 1:56 PM
I am thinking about switching from enamels to acrylics. I really like the effects of the Testors Metalizer Enamels. I was wondering, do any of you guys know if you can use the metalizers over acrylics with or without sealing the acryls with future? If you can't, does anyone know of an acrylic product similar to the Testors Metalizers?

Thanks in Advance,
