Base paint for Alcad II
Posted by hud on Thursday, November 10, 2005 7:36 AM

Hey to all,

Getting ready to paint a P-51D in NMF using Alcad. I've built three of these guys already using Swanny's method of prepainting everything with Krylon gloss black extracted from the spray can to be used in the airbrush. They turned out fine but the smell of Krylon in my house will not be tolerated by the wife any longer and I don't want to move my paint booth outside for a five minute painting gig.  So, what's another alternative for a basecoat before the Alcad? Or do I need a basecoat? I will be masking panels so I  can vary the colors a bit. Will MM acrylic primer do? Or should I stay with an enamel?  What would ya'll use? Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

I've used Testors acryl gloss black once.  Came out 'ok'.

If you are not using the polished shades then a well cured base of Future will work well.

mass,

polished shades?  I'm not sure if I know what these are. What I'm planning to use is Alcad II Lacquer. Is that considered polishable? I'm aware of the Testors MM metalizer shades and that they can be polished. Don't know if the Alcad stuff is the same. Please advise. Thanks.

Their "Polished Aluminum" and "Chrome" are a bit more fragile and take more care....but any other shade should work fine with Future.

Hud - what he meant was colors like polished aluminum, chrome and such... if you are using regular aluminum then a well cured (48 hours to be safe) coat of Future actually has worked better for me than the black gloss enamel.  Just spray a couple of thin coats then hit it with a couple of thicker coats (not too thick) until slightly glossy to glossy... let it dry for 48 hours and go to town on it!!!  Use several light coats of Alclad in the beginning because too heavy of a Alclad coat could melt deeper than the future...

check out:  http://www.alclad2.com/alclad-home.html and they list several other primers for the non-shiny finishes...

All,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the Future method. I know the ins and outs of that stuff so it should be painless. Thanks again.
