When do I take the masks off?
Posted by mfsob on Friday, November 18, 2005 9:31 PM

I've primed and painted my 1/72 B-25 after masking off the windows and cockpit with Bare Metal Foil, and am now ready for the gloss coat so I can put some decals on this puppy. When do I take off the BMF - after all of the painting is done, or before I put on the final flat coat?

And just how hard is it to pry a tiny piece of BMF off after it has been burnished down, painted over like 5 times and left for innumerable days?

well you can leave it awhile on the canopy without worrying, I would wait until AFTER the final dull coat to remove it..

I have had mine on as much as 7 days or so and although it seemed to leave a residue, washing with soap and water got it all off... just plain old hand soap from the dispenser.

I just take a toothpick and gently nudge at the corners of the BMF, you'll get it to where it starts bunching up then you can use the toothpick to get under it and just pull straight up towards you from there, if you push it all the way across the clear plastic it might leave scratches.

Good luck!!!

7 days?  I've left my masking on for a month before....guess I shouldn't do that, huh? :)  I usually use Black Magic masks, and they come right off, no residue problems at all.

Regardless of residue issues, you definitely don't want to shoot flat over your canopy which will fog the surface.

Definately don't take them off unil ALL spraying is done.  I just started using this method and have the residue problem.  After taking off the mask, laying down somew masking tape and peeling off 1 or 2 times takes care of it.  A light polish with a micro fiber cloth used for eyeglasses and your good to go.

I use Goo Be Gone to take the residue off but I do like to get the masks off as soon as possible.  The other tip I would give is not to put the canopies on until all painting, weathering and coating is done.  It's usually the very last thing I do.  In this way I can have them completed and sitting on the side and don't have to worry about messing them up.
