When I tried doing an enamel wash using thinners to dilute I ended up with shiny streaks even though I was using a matt colour. Presumably it was the thinners to blame? I decided to stick to artist's oil paints instead, and that doesn't seem to cause the same problem. I use artist's acrylics on my models too.

I myself had no succes with enamel washes. I would suggets using oil paint, black or burnt sienna (of a mix) heavily thinned with white spirits/turpentine/lighter fluid.

After perusing the various articles on applying washes to models, I have to admit my results are almost 100% improved over my drab old models of yesteryear.  (Thanks Swanny and others for your articles)

However, i still have one last little problem to overcome in the process to make things perfect.

My washes create great grungy dirty airplanes, with plenty of smears and such, but I have not perfected the art of removing all the excess wash in order to create CLEAN aircraft.

I use thinned enamels over a FUTURE coat, and a remove excess with a thinner-dipped cotton swab going perpendicular to the panel line.

I can remove about 80% of the excess, but if I go for a clean aircraft I end up doing one of two things. Either I end up wiping out the paint from my panel lines leaving me where I started.....or i actually start to pull up paint from beneath the FUTURE somehow.

Help.   I love my oily dirty planes, but i want to try a clean one sometime.

Do I need a thicker Future base?  different paint/thinner ratio? Wait longer before I remove the excess? Remove sooner?
