I need a serious opinion on an airbrush
Posted by eizzle on Thursday, December 8, 2005 9:15 PM
I am contemplating buying the Badger Crescendo 175 dual action airbrush set for about $120 (w/ shipping) I am wanting some feedback from you guys before I plunk down that much cash though. Is it a good brush? I understand its a Badger and they are supposed to be good, I just want to make sure that its going to be one I will be happy with for awhile. I will be doing everything from cars to camo on planes with it, so that is my reasoning for dual action. Any opinions on this one? Thanks gentlemen.

It's a very good airbrush but I don't think much of that price.  DixieArt (www.dixieart.com) has the brush alone for $49.95 and the complete set (brush, bottles, all three heads and needles, and hose) for $69.95.  Here's The Link on their site.  They are a very good company to order from, I've bought a couple of brushes from them.

I've heard nothing but good things about the AB. I have the Badger 150, and I think the world of it.

So long folks!

It is a good airbrush but it was designed for T-shirt airbrushing although it works fine for models.
Do you want a siphon-feed airbrush like this or have you considered a gravity-feed?

Hmmm a 120 budget for a Badger 175... Id get a Badger 100g (medium size color cup) with a fine tip for 58.95 and a Badger 100lg (large color cup) with a med tip for 60.95.  Free shipping from Dixieart also.  The Badger 100 is imho a great tool.  Not to knock the 175 or any of its fans but the obvious advantages of the 100 being gravity fed bumps it up several notches.  Of cousre you could always just get 1 Ab and order a extra head tip and needle instead of getting 2 ABs and save about 30 bucks.  Atleast look into the 100 and see if it meets your needs.

eizzle - I have the 175 and it is a good brush, with the medium nozzle/needle it will cover just about anything... I haven't tried the fine nozzle/needle but I'll bet you can get some decent detail with it.  The set comes with all three needles/nozzles .. I really need to try that fine one just for comparison now that I think about it.

If you want finer detail I second or third the 100, I don't have one but I find with my 175 for general purpose stuff and the Iwata I have for the finer detail I have it made.  I got the dual airbrush manifold so I can switch from one to the other without stopping...

I looked it over pretty good, the 175 looked like a good brush for everything from small parts painting, to car bodys, which I do a lot of to. I am thinking about going with the compresserless route and just using an air tank. I have a compressor, but I don't want it outside all the time, especially now when the moisture inside would freeze. Thanks for all the help guys, its great to know if I have a question I can post on here and somebody will answer it pretty quick! You guys are great, Man I love you... anyhoo, you get the ideaBig Smile [:D]

Well, I got my A/B today! Its an early Christmas Big Smile [:D]  haven't got a chance to get my air tank and try to hook it up yet, but hopefully tonight I can get a chance to try it out and practice a little. Thanks for the opinions guys!

I went up to the barn tonight and set up the air tank I plan on using and played with the brush a little. The double action is a little hard to get used to, I pointed it and pushed the button, and nothing but air? I was like "great, haven't even had it a whole day and its broke"! Then I remembered I had to pull the button back, which made a splatter the size of TexasBig Smile [:D] I think I might need to turn down the air pressure just a smidgeSign - With Stupid [#wstupid]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Living Legend:

You mentioned you had both the Badger 100G and LG models.  I am considering the purchase of a 100, I like to paint military/sci fi miniatures.  I wanted something that had more control to allow me to paint finer camouflage details such as small blotches and squiggle patterns.  I have an old Badger 200 that needs a little work though I thought I could use it for base and primaer coats.  Anyway, I was wondering if the larger color cup makes it tough to paint small details- the cup looks so big in pictures.  The size of that cup might be nice if I were painting a lot of minis at once or even if I decided to do some base coats with it.  I was just wondering if the LG cup seems to be too clumsy during fine work?  Or have you found that the smaller "G" version is too small or easy to tip over when painting details?  I would appreciate any input from your experiences.
