Artograph 1520 spray booth
Posted by dhshaw on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 2:58 PM
I am going to be buying a spray booth soon and am seriously considering this model. I did some searching in the forum and found a little info about them.
I was wondering if anyone has had one for a year or more and what they think of them after a good deal of use?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

Before you take the plunge on the Artograph, check out the booths made by Pace industries.  I was going to buy the Artograph until I found the ones made by Pace and wound up buying one.  It easily has been my best modeling investment.  The price of the replacement filters for the Artograph were a big concern.  I bought the biggest one that Pace makes and it can easily handle 1/32 kits and larger.  It has a built in light, variable speed fan, extra outlets built into the cabinet and uses ordinary furnace filters.  It also has a detachable work tray that attaches to the front of the cabinet and provides some really convenient work space.  I get absolutely no fumes in the house when I spray and was easily vented out my basement window.

Check it out you won't be sorry.

I've had one for a while now; used it to finish 4 kits over the course of a little over a year, but it's currently boxed up because I'm (hopefully) going to be moving soon.

You've probably seen that there are three filters: prefilter, middle filter, and carbon filter.  The prefilter is good for 2-3 builds, maybe more if you don't have much overspray. I haven't changed the other two yet, though they're supposedly good for about a year.  The carbon filter is supposed to pick up organics from the paint and thinner so that outside venting isn't necessary, although there is a 4" port on the back for that purpose; I didn't vent mine outside, and don't recall having any problems (most hobby paint booths only have the equivalent of a prefilter/furnace filter and are supposed to be vented outside, though many hobbyists don't)

The largest thing I painted in it was a 1/48 scale F-15, and that was sort of a tight fit.  I would compare the noise to a cooking range hood on high speed.

I would strongly recommend getting the metal hood to go with it... it has an acrylic panel in the top which allows light in (use a clip-on desk lamp).  I purchased the base from Bearair and the metal hood separately through Madison Art Shop, but some places sell the base and metal hood together.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

I've been doing the comparison shopping now as well for a spray booth and finally decided on the Paasche available through EBay.  It's shipping soon, with the total price including shipping and handling still under $200.  I have compared all that is out there, and for the price, the size of this booth (2'x2'x2') is a great deal.  It's very large compared to those made by Artograph, Badger, and all others.  These are new booths shipping from the factory; I don't know why they're going through Ebay but there have been a continuous stream of them available.  The downside, as I see it, is this: no switch for the fan, no light installed.  But I can do these myself, and in thinking about building it would have cost me nearly as much and a bit of frustration no doubt, and I've got all of that I can handle just with my models!  Check it out, link below.  I think it was the best bet out there for the price.  You can always do a search for it through the forums too; a few people have had good experience with it.  Good luck and happy painting Cool [8D]
