P-47 dark olive of 56thFG
Posted by mebucko on Friday, December 30, 2005 8:27 AM
I am currently building a Revell P-47 Razorback, and would love to replicate Chris Sherland's dark olive, that he used in"Large Scale Planes". He said he used Gunze Olive Drab, and added black and violet. The amounts were not listed, and his e-mail is no longer valid. I've heard that RAF dark green might also work. Can anyone help an amateur with the color ratio needed? Thanks, and Happy New Year!

This how i solve my paint color issues if you have a picture of a paint chip sample just take your olive drab and add a few drops of black to it and mix until you get that surton color then make shure you mix enough paint to cover you model and put it in a 35mm film cup remember the color is alway darker before it drys so make shure you do a few small sample mixes and paint a peace of scratch material with the diffrent shades  it dosent have to be perfect just close enought to look good. Hope that helps you out. by this time you  might be done with it already.

Thanks!! Good advice - will be droppin', mixin', and testin' in the coming weeks. Also, I didn't know it was darker before it dried.  Thanks again!  Have a great day and New Year!

wep well sort of some colors match perfect as soon as they are spryed on and when its its ita tad lighter. for comparison take a look a cars sitting or driving now look for the reds and the silvers any car that has been in an accedent and fixed the fixed parts is usualy a diffrent shad, red and silver are hard colors to match.

Do you have a sample of the color you could scan and post here?  I know Humbrol makes a Dark Olive Drab 41, Color of Eagles does an olive drab 41 that seem to match the sample I saw of the Humbrol.  It was the color used forward of the windscreen and behind the pilot under the canopy to prevent sun glare on the NMF P-47's.

I'll see if I can find that sample again and post it here for you... maybe you can see if it matches or not...

Thanks. I do not have a sample to scan, but it can be seen on "Large Scale Planes" 1/32 Revell P-47 D-11 Thunderbolt by Chris Sherland. I really appreciate the help you are offering. Take care!

Ok I checked out the site you listed and I think the surest bet to that color would be Green Drab FS34086, it's the color bombs were painted... it is just a darker version of olive drab.  If not, I would try by taking x drops of olive green 41 and one drop at a time adding black to it.. then look at the ratio and increase it for what you think your will need.  (10 drops OD to 2 black would be a 1/5 ratio etc..)

But I think the green drab would do ya right... I'll see if I can find something I painted that color and take a pic of it and post here for ya later...

-=edit=-

Model Master makes it, it is paint #1710

Thanks again. I looked at the swatches on their website (know they are not really accurate), but you are right on the money. I think it will be exactly what I need. Will beat feet to the local and pick up a bottle to test.

Have a great day!

Just finished airbrushing the green drab - looks great. After a test I added 3 drops of black, and it darkened it just enough! Will send a photo, once I finish and complete the diorama. Thanks again - have a great weekend!
