Decal first or wash first?
Posted by MonsterZero on Thursday, January 12, 2006 11:37 AM
My X-Wing starfighter model (in overal light grey) is now airbrushed with acrylic gloss clear ready for decaling. It also needs a dark grey oil wash to go into the recesses. Should I decal before I wash with the oils? Or should I wash now and decal later?

i say decal now, wash later.  don't forget to cover the decals with some more clear gloss after you're done putting them on.  i know of people weathering first, then applying decals and adding scratches+drybrush to those as well but i think the markings are part of the base paint job + camo + whatever so they should be treated as such.  plus the decals might not go on so well over the oil.

is this the finemolds x-wing?  if so, good luck with all the decals.  there's about 50,000,000, with half being small dashes mm's apart.  when i did mine, i actually made most of those marks with a drafting pen.  check the sci-fi section for "my old x-wing" topic if you'd like to see how it came out.

Goat monkey's right, decal/clear coat/wheather. Use Setting solution like Mr.Mark softer or microsol to help the decals snug better to the surface, it will help your wash in the long run. Hope this helps! Happy modeling

There is no guide to applying the tiniest decals. The schematics provided by FineMolds give you a good idea where the big ones go but most of the tiny markings are a mystery to me. Is there a solution?

really?  i had a full decal guide.  let me take a stab at this since i have a theory.  did you download the translated instructions from hlj and dump the japanese ones?  there's an extra sheet in japanese that's not in the translated instructions.  it's the decal guide which has every decal placement position on it including all the dots and dashes that i wish weren't there.  i'm guessing they didn't translate it because it's fairly self-explanatory being pretty much all numbers and pictures.  the only thing i wish they did translate was an explanation of which x-wing scheme is what.
