This might help when using Model Master tape:

Usage/Tips:

1) Watch out! Low adhesion can cause applied paint to seep under edges.  To prevent this from ruining your paint jobs:

   a) Spray paint from an angle where mist does not gather at edge where tape meets surface.

   b) On a two-tone paint job, paint the first color, let dry thoroughly. Mask, then shoot the same color lightly to seal any points at which seepage would occur. Let dry. Now spray the second color. - Viola!

The above comes from Testors Modeler's Technical Guide.

But if you see the orangish paper Tamiya tape try it... it'll be worth every penny you pay for it!!!  real pliant and has a sharp edge to it,  and while not allowing bleed through it is easy to get off without paint pull up... even after a week or so.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] The Tamiya tape is great stuff. I buy the refill packs, its cheaper, plus I don't need another dispenser of some sort to cluter up my desk Big Smile [:D] It really is worth the money, I think I paid $2? for the 18mm stuff and $3 something for the 40mm tape. Its worth every penny!

I hear you about the 3M tape - I already use it for most model masking, but with this tiny 1/72 biplane I was working on, was hoping for a sharper edge due to the three-color paint scheme.

And speaking of the blue 3M tape, there are various levels of THAT as well. It comes in "guaranteed lift-off dates" of 30-, 60-, 90- and 120-days plus. I have been using the 30 day stuff since it seems to have the least amount of adhesive while still burnishing down well enough to prevent bleed through.

I'm just mainly upset at paying top dollar for a "premium" modeling product that doesn't work as well as what you could get at the Dollar Store. Disapprove [V]

Ditto on the blue painters tape... but be careful, there are several brands out there.  The Painters Pro brand (a darker blue than the 3M) has a tougher glue and I have had it pull up chips when masking, I always buy the lighter blue stuff now.

Give 3M's blue painter's tape a try. It has a low tack so it doesn't leave much if any adhesive residue. You can buy a large roll (1/2" width) for about $5 at Lowes or Home Depot. A much less expensive option than Tamiya and Model Master. If you cut it in thin strips, 1/8" or less, you can mask canopy edges with it. I use Swanny's method for canopies and I haven't experienced any bleeding with it. I have also use it to mask paint jobs on several models with no bleeding.

yeah there is two flavors of Tamiya tape.. the plastic type and the paper type.  The paper type is a dream!  You can do almost anything with it and it is the schnizzit for masking canopies!!!  The plastic type is only good for masking large flat areas in my experience.  You have to be careful to burnish the edges down with a toothpick to keep from getting bleed through.

I hear yeah.  I got some Pactra tape that Testors distributes and I had the same problem.  Try electrian's black vinyl electric tape.  It's about a dollar a roll.  Cut it about a 1/4 inch wide and you can bend it all around the model.  It's low tack too.

Testors Model Master tape - :P

I splurged on a roll of Testors Model Master masking tape, No. 50622C, to help with the three-color paint scheme on my Fokker D VII and boy, was I disappointed! I should have spent the $5.49 on another bottle of paint or something, because no matter how I applied it, no matter how firmly I burnished it down, I got leaks. Not fun when dark blue paint leaks onto white! And the stuff is so darn stiff, it is almost impossible to get it to go around a corner and have that 90-degree angle stay tight down on the model.

I know there are better, i.e. a lot more expensive, masking tapes out there. Just wanted to pass my experience on.
