Painting over Testors metalizer
Posted by cbreeze on Saturday, January 21, 2006 9:15 PM

Greetings,

Was wondering if you can safely paint over metalizer paint, in particular acrylic paint.

Thanks,

Chuck B.

Yes, you can paint enamels or acrylics over it. The metilizers are lacquer, so they should go on first, then enamels, then acrylics. Be careful masking the metilizers though, it doesn't stick to plastic real well.

Therein lies the problem, Testors metalizers don't adhere well to plastic.  As Eizzle said, you can paint over them however the overall adhesion is only as good as the adhesion of the metalizer itself.  Personally, wherever possible, I do things the opposite way.  I paint the base color first and then spray the metalizer over it.  That eliminates the problem of adhesion and that caused by the masking tape.

FYI, Alclad is a lot more trouble to work with but the results are worth the effort.  It adheres very well and masking is not a problem.

Its a Fact that Testors Metalizers don't stick to the plastic as well as paint.. thats why you should always use their Metalizer sealer over it.

I just built a Ford Trimotor, painted in overall Model Master Aluminum Metalizer, then sealed with Metalizer Sealer.. and after that dried a light coat of Future Floor polish.

Then I masked it off to paint the gloss black areas and didn't have any problems at all with the masking tape taking off the metalizer.

also I used tamiya masking tape..my favorite

though I will admit i had a little tape bleed under in a couple of spots... lol

I'm with Scott on this one.. (through a series of hard knocks) I learned spraying the regular color first, then masking over the area you wanted to show through and spraying the metalizer (Alclad in this case) seemed to do the trick...

Testors Metallizers are even more prone to pull up, so unless it is a large area you want to be a non-metal color.. masking and spraying the metallizer on top does the trick!

This is how it seems to me, the metilizers don't stick well, and anything you coat over that will only have a good bond to the previous coat, but if the metilizer didn't stick good, it will pull it all up. The sealer, at least this is what I make of it, is used so if you rub it it doesn't rub off, it doesn't seem like it would help it stick better? I may be wrong, and if I am please correct me, that is just how it seems to me in my little plastic world Big Smile [:D]

I guess the thing was that after the sealer I used a layer of Future.. (arylic floor polish).. on the tri-motor I masked off the nose and the window area's down the sides painted gloss black and didn't have any metalizer peal off when I removed the tape..
