am i ready to paint my tamiya cars?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 4, 2006 8:37 PM
this will be the 1st time i paint a scale model, so i'm starting off with an efini rx-7 from tamiya.
i have paint including the rattle cans for the body of the car, since i don't have an airbrush.
3 different sized brushes, 2 round ones, 1 flat one
clippers
tamiya cement.
i'm considering getting alcohol to thin the tamiya acrlyic paint, but i looked inside the bottle and it looks pretty thin, if not should i use water?
now b4 i start, how should u paint and construct? like wat do u do first? do u build a small part, then paint or do u paint the parts separately, let them cure, then assemble? also when is the right time to use the tamiya cement?

thanks

The best time to use cement is before you paint the parts. It melts the plastic to weld the pieces together, so if there is paint on there, it can't get to as much plastic so your joint will be weaker. I would recommend you getting a small bottle of super glue to use on pieces that have to be painted before being glued together.

You can use alcohol to thin the Tamiya paint, it works well for me, but if your brushing it on, you don't need to thin it, and you can use just about any paint thinner to clean your brush with.

I would suggest since this is your first car, or scale model for that fact, that you just follow the instructions to the Tee. That is always the safest bet, and most of the time you won't have any problems, just make sure you read over the instructions really good before you start for any notes that you need to be aware of. Good Luck Newbie, and post a couple pics when you get it done Thumbs Up [tup]

If it's this kit #24110, you will need glue - it's not a snap-together kit. As far as I know, Tamiya don't make snap-together car kits (except for the "toy" mini-4wd racers).

really? i'm pretty sure its a snap together kit, but i know there are also other tamiya kits that do need glue. anyway i just painted my first 2 parts, was damn hard with a brush. figures i don't need any thinner, way too thin if i use any. my painting isn't perfect eg. the whole part isn't covered exactly, but i'm happy with it. also the instruction manual said u don't need glue, and it's ready to assemble straight out of the box BUT there definitely are some kits where you need glue.

If I recall correctly, Tamiya's efini rx7 and RX7 R1 (LHD version) needs cement in assembly.  Could yours be one of them FC3S that Tamiya made motorized version of?
