Help - Ordering extra needle parts for Badger AB's
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, February 19, 2006 10:11 PM

Hey folks,

I'm going to get a Badger 100g fine, and I also wanted to get an extra head assembly and needle for the medium tip.  I just wanted any knowledgeable advice on what other parts to get that would make needle changes any easier.  Looks like the needle chuck might be a good idea but is there anything else to get now so I won't have to reorder later & pay more shipping?  I haven't used the Regdab before either, is it worth the extra few bucks?  Thanks for any help.

You need to order the following:

50-0162 Medium Head Assembly (this includes the nozzle, the tip and the head, as well as the head washer)
50-046 Needle bearing (this is tiny and can get lost, better buy two!)
50-0602 Medium Needle (I suggest buying two, and while you're at it buy an extra Fine Needle 50-0401, bend one or dull the tip and you're pooched until the replacement comes).

I see no reason to buy another chuck, you only loosen this to remove the needle.

Regdab is recommended as a lube, and it also helps prevent dry tip problems if you spray acrylics. I bought the Iwata Super Medea Lube at the LHS and it's twice the price I've seen the Regdab online for.

That's a nice AB you've got on order. I have the 150 with Medium needle which is the same brush only as a siphon fed version. My plan (Shhh, don't tell the wife!) is to order the 100G with the Fine needle. The parts are interchangable.

Now all I need is a couple of quick change connections and I'm set!

So long folks!

Thanks, Bgrigg!  Can the average guy replace a needle bearing?  The DixieArt websites says that you need the factory to do this.  I have used a Model 200 of and on for years , but I am out of practice with ABs in general and I'm not sure how likely I could replace one of those.

Well, I was given an ancient Badger 150 which was missing that part and I replaced mine! Didn't know you weren't supposed to. Didn't seem an onerous task to me. I pulled off the head assembly without removing the old needle, slid the new bearing onto the needle and slid it into place, then put the head assembly back on with a new head washer. It seems to work!

Of course, you could pack what I knew about airbrushes into a vanishingly small area then. If I knew then what I know now I would have just sent the brush in for an overhaul at the factory.

You might want to buy the 50-050 Prepared Beeswax, that's used to seal the head assembly onto the brush.

So long folks!
