Tamiya Acrylic Thinner ?

The Tamiya thinner is excellent. However, it is very expensive. I use isopropyl alchohol and a drop of dishsoap.

Water wouldn't work at all, but the Isopropyl Crockett mentioned should do the job...

I'd add that 90% isopropyl is better than the 70% stuff (30% is water), at least in my experience. The odd thing is that in really hot weather, I'll add up to 10% distilled/deionized water to the isopropyl to slow drying time, and it works fine. I guess that 20% water is okay as a cosolvent, but 30% is too much.

Do not use ethyl or methyl alcohol—not compatible with Tamiya paints.

Actually, water does work well for cleaning up (i.e. eye droppers, stir sticks, etc.).  I found this out after ruining a damned nice paint job with Tamiya paints...  Testors, will you take me back?

Tamiya thinner is a wonderfull product.  Dont forget Tamiya thinner has a retarder in it.

Maybe its the retarder that gives it that wicked smell.  I've always used X20 so far but I'd like to give the isopropyl alchohol a try now.

I've tried several alternative thinners to the solvent based acrylics and haven't found one that can beat the Tamiya thinner... that said I always buy the big bottle of it (250ml I think) which is like $5.95, the 30 ml bottle is like $4.00 by itself!!!  It's also great for thinning future.. I get a nice gloss coat when using it...
