got an airbursh, now I really need some help
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 27, 2006 8:24 AM
I jsut picked up a badger 200.3 airbrushing kit and really enjoy this thuss far but would like to know what the sizes are of the testors bottles and if there might be an adaptor so I can jsut use the bottles instead of having to pur the pain into a mixing bottle and then spray. The main reason for this is not having to waste so much paint using the larger supplied bottles. 3oz I believe they are, and you ahve to put a good portion of that in there for the hose to pick it up. mixing can be done else where, but I have an abundance of the little testor bottles when I used to hand paint things.

also how can I determine the needle and head sizes used on this model? I would eventually like to airbursh super fine pencil lines but with what is provided that is not possible. about 1/8" line is as small as it will go.

Just out of courisoty what are some good places to buy airbrushing supplies? things like cleaning brushes, needles, mixing jars and the such?

Any help would be grealy appreciated.

Bear Air and Dixie Art sell parts for Badgers, and both offer adapters to fit a limited selection of paint bottles. With the exception of MM Acrylics which claim to be airbrush ready, most paints need to be thinned before spraying. Did you not get a color cup? I have a Badger 150 and I mostly use the color cup.

Unfortunately, I believe the badger kit being mentioned is a bottom feed only brush and does not have an option for gravity feed. There is an adaptor for Floquil paints, which 'looks' like the same size as the testors to me. But as Bgrigg says, you need to thin anyway so you will still need to mix it somewhere even on a small paint bottle.

The color cup I mentioned IS for siphon feed brushes. The 150 is a dual action siphon fed brush. I think the cup he needs is P# 50-0482. This should be available from Dixie Art or Bear Air, or you can order direct from Badger.

Tamiya bottles will fit the Badger cap assembly but you have to trim the pickup tube somewhat.   Heat it slightly and bend it so it aims toward the bottom corner of the bottle.  Trim it so it is just barely off the bottom, right in the corner when the brush is leaned forward, and you can pick up virtually all of the paint.

The Fine head has an "F" stamped on it, the medium an "M", and the large an "L".  The fine needle has one band around the rear, the medium needle has two, and the large needle has 3.

Bill is right, there is one available.  I have one but seldom use it because it doesn't have a cap on it.

You need to find out  what type of model 200 was included in your set, so look on your 200's body where the model number is stamped.  If it is a 200NH, it does not have different size needle/tip assemblies available for it.  I have the 200NH, and while I think it is an excellent airbrush, I don't think that it will go down to super fine lines.

Here's an article on how to make a Badger adapter for a Testor's paint bottle

I've only spilled it the one time. Blush [:I]

You learn to hold the brush level and move the model!

Yes the brush in question is the 200 HN model, and NO I cant get near a fine "pencil line". that sucks about not having the ability to change out the needles and heads on them. :( The single action isn't that bad thuss far as long as I use a real air compressor and not those cans.

I did get a couple of mixing bottles,2 and one shooter, (and am about to order a bunch more) but I dont like the idea of having to use such large sized mixing/shooting bottles and having to pour in so much paint in order to just reach the bottom of the hose there. And THX a bunch for the link on the cap modifactoins there. that made a lot of sense and I have a few tricks up my sleve now hehe.

On the needle I have it does have one band on the rear of it while the head/crown assembly has no stamps that I can see.

I appreciate the links and all of hte helpfull advice you guys have given me. I plan on making an order here shortly for all of the parts/suplies that I am going to need to get off on the right foot and not have to stumble around looking for them later on.

Also about the cup assembly for the testors paints, when I bought the Testors #9199 acrylic "spray ready" paints it came with some adapters for the Testors and aztek air brushes and found one that will work temporarly. I am not so sure about how it will lay as it dosent have a lot of vaccume going on inside the bottle area due to some tri cut holes in the cap. I did try it though and it did pull the paint up and spray out but I think that over time it could very easily casue some serious messes if one wasn't carefull with it!! I am going to be making my own little adapters for the types of paints I use so that won't present any probs there.
