Tamiya M1025 Humvee color question
Posted by PontiacRich on Friday, March 3, 2006 11:27 PM

Hey all,

I don't visit here often, but I've got a bug in my craw that only the fine folks here at FSM forum can answer.

I recently submitted the following question to the Tamiya website:

I'm about to build the M1025 Humvee (Military Minature Series No. 263) and want to use the Gulf War color scheme.

The instructions call for TS46 Light Sand for the body and most of the components. However, I would like to airbrush the model with Tamiya XF paints, but I did not see "Light Sand" in the XF color wheel. The closest I could find is XF57 Buff or XF59 Desert Yellow, neither of which match the TS46 color.

Does Tamiya make an XF equivalent to TS46? Would the color be closely approximzated by mixing XF57 & XF59 and - if so - in what ratio? Are there any other options?

This was the response I received back:

Dear valued Tamiya customer:

Unfortunately, the only paints I can recommend using are the paints that are called for in the assembly instructions. If you would like to airbrush a color that we do not offer in acrylics, you can always decant the lacquer from the spray can and airbrush it after all of the propellant has escaped.

Outside of that, I would recommend visiting an online forum to find out what ratios to use when mixing paints to come up with the correct colors you desire.

If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Thanks,

Phil

Can anyone tell me why Tamiya Customer Service reps would tell me that they cannot recommend anything other than what the instructions say?  After all, I did say I wanted to use other Tamiya colors!

Can anyone provide me with answers to the questions I posed to Tamiya?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Tanks & Planes to ya!

If a company sells both paints and models they will nearly always recommend their paints for their models.  Just a fact of life and business.  Since Tamiya doesn't have an XF acrylic of that particular color they couldn't recommend a replacement since that would be recommending another company's products over theirs.

The color chart at This Link shows several different sand colors.  Perhaps you can find something close there.  Also keep in mind that a layer of dirt, dust, grime, as well as fading from the sun is going to radically change the "New Paint" color.
