Are they the same thng ?
Posted by scotty on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 5:07 PM

Having just brought a bottle of  Tamiya X-20A thinner it smelt more or less like isoprponyl are they the same and am I just wasting more money buying the 'offical' brand, wouldn't they do the same anyway....as the Tamiya costs £5 for 250ml and iso costs £3.50 for double that on Evilbay.

Scott.

No idea whether they are the same or not—you cold try an MSDS search.

But 90 percent isopropyl alcohol is all I use to thin Tamiya paints.

I suspect the Tamiya thinner is isopropyl with an acrylic retarder. I find that paint thinned with only the iso dries very quickly, and can cause problems with "dry tip". Mind you I've used 99% iso, which is pretty darn pure!

So long folks!

Actually the Tamiya thinner does not smell like IPA. IPA has a stronger, sweeter odor.

It's also true that if you use IPA in your paint it will dry up real fast, but the Tamiya thinner actually retards the paint a little bit. I will use the Tamiya thinner 50:50 to paint, but that's just me.

Albert, what brush and what pressure do you use with that 50/50 Tamiya mix? How do you like the results?

^Sorry if you got the wrong idea... but I don't own an airbrush. I just discovered that for brush-painting, my usual mix of 50:50 works better than other ratios. Here are some of my previous works... they are not very good, but I hope you see how a simple brush with this ratio can be "good enough".

1:72 scale F-14

1:48 scale F-16

1:72 scale F-16C

1:72 scale F-18

1:48 scale Comanche

Albert, you can upgrade that "good enough" to excellent.

It's hard to believe you brush painted those models.

^Thanks! Also, GSI Creos Mr Top Coat Flat and Mr Top Coat Gloss are some of my best friends! (Unless you guys can recommend a better overcoat spray?)

Yah! What Bill said!! Wow!! [wow] If this is your "good enough," I'm not sure I'd want to see your "excellent!" I think it would make me weep with frustration. Boohoo [BH]

I was wondering if I had to go airbrush or not and I will make some tests on some little unfinished aircraft tonight but if I don't like it, I can clearly see that a wonderfull result can be achieved with regular brushing method.

Excellent job.

No matter where you go ....... there you are.

Albert,

Man-o-man, no matter how many times I gander at your camouflaged F-16, I still can't belive it was "brush painted."  You've got skills!
