Drybrush for dummies?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 9:37 PM

I've been reading about how to drybrush, but still don't get a hang of how to do it. Does anybody know if there are any pictures somewhere on Internet that shows how to do it, or even better a video?

How far up the brush should there be paint? When dipping point in paint, brush is straight down, vertical? Dip the point and then wipe of the paint from only the tip of the brush, or should the whole brush be "dry"?

My understanding (after reading yet again today about how to do it) that brush is going to be vertical (90 degrees) to item when drybrushing? Is that correct?

GIVE ME SOME PICTURES!! I'm much better and imitating other people then read about it and try to execute it. I wish I could lean over somebody when he is drybrushing.

Great link, Bill! ARC to the rescue, again.

A couple of comments to the article:

Many people use worn out or cheap brushes for dry brushing—it's hard on the brushes. But it is much easier to learn the technique with a good quality, new brush as recommended.

Some find paper towels or thin, uncoated cardboard better for removing the paint from the brush.

WOW you guys at this forum are amazing. You know where all kinds of articles are for helping with our hobby. Thanks for sharing. Wink [;)]

If nobody minds me thowing in my My 2 cents [2c]

I found it easiest to drybrush using a somewhat stiff bristle brush.
Also I hold the brush close to parallel to the item I'm painting... well ok, maybe a 20º to 30º angle. And with just a very slight amount of paint left in the bristle's after wiping on a paper towel, I ever so lightly just skim across the top (raised details) of the item I'm working on. Sometimes I have to go over it a few times because my touch was too light. But it's easier to add paint then to remove it.

Oh yeah, an important note - practice, practice, practice. Smile [:)]
