decanting spray-can paint
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, March 25, 2006 5:15 PM
I remember there being a recent tool-tips or article in FSM describing a technique for decanting spray-can paint for use in an airbrush, but I cannot find the article and searching the FSM website is yielding nothing.

Can anyone direct me to the correct issue? Thanks.

Not sure if this is the one you're looking for, but there is a technique described in Matthew Usher's article on the Revell '63 Corvette in the November '05 issue.

Basically, it involves spraying paint through an extension tube attached to the spray can nozzle into an airbrush jar, with the mouth of the jar covered with masking tape (through a hole in the tape) to avoid backwash. Allow time for the propellant to dissipate from the paint in the jar (an hour or two) and it's good to go.

Perfect! That was where I saw it. Thank you!

I just spray it through a plastic soda straw into a bottle.  Stiring the paint afterwards will help dissipate the propellant quicker.

Here's my primer can with the plug removed, plastic rod inserted and decanted for airbrushing.  I read the same article in FSM.  Works like a charm!
