Paint color conversion help please!
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 4:01 AM

Hi, I am looking for a little help with some paint colors if possible. I am new to building military kits, and have just bought Trumpeter's new BR52 Steam Locomotive. I would like to paint it in the illustrated splinter camoflage scheme, but I prefer using Model Master paints. Can anyone tell me the closest match for these two colors?

Gunze Sangyo H40 Field Gray

Gunze Sangyo H21 Middle Stone

I have read a review of this kit that suggests that the colors might be Panzer Gray and Desert Yellow, can anyone guide me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

i just got the kit along with the railroad gun and am also looking for camo schemes. no luck so far here are with the 3d computer modelers at military -meshes .com. will probably hit the local RR museum in denver (actually golden) and get some advice on weathering and see if they have any info on german railroads.

dc5itr - the Panzer grey and Desert yellow sound pretty close.  especialy because Middlestone is an RAf color, so the Desert Yellow would be a closer match for the country you are painting it for...

-=edit=-

actually if you posted this in the armor forum you would get a good response.. even though it is not armor, they could tell you the exact colors for the type of paint you use to match it to for the time period you are modeling it.  Artillery used the same color as armor in many situations...

Having grown in an era when you were instructed by kit manufacturers that all German aircraft were light Green and Dark Green on top and light blue underneath and all British aircraft were Dark brown and Dark Green (or OD) on top and light Blue or Light Green underneath, I have developed a great distrust for kit manufacturers colors and schemes given in the instructions.  The only answer is to research the particular subject you are modeling.

The only problem is that compared to ships, planes and tanks, WW II military Railroading  is somewhat lacking in available data.  The only book I can remember near the subject is one published by Schiffer on German Armored Trains.  You might try posting a request for information on WW II German train equipment over on the Model Railroader forum.

Having said that, I would suspect that Deutches Reiches Bann engines utilized by the military were painted much like German Military equipment - initially Panzer Grey, then Panzer Yellow w/Panzer Grey areas showing thru (areas not painted) and finally overall Panzer Yellow with Green or Brown splotches - either individually or together randomly over the Panzer Yellow.
