Flat Finish Q
Posted by Bill Clarke on Thursday, April 6, 2006 5:39 PM

Hi guys, is there a chart, table, ect that lists the various flat finishes by manufacturer and what type of paint they are compatible with ?

This would assist me big time.

Thanks. Smile [:)]

Basically any flat is compatible when it is applied properly.

Never seen a chart. Just use a little common sense and go for it. Like Mike said, any of them can be used on anything if you apply it properly.

Personally, I prefer Polly Scale flat coat. Thin with 30-50% Windex (Swanny recipe) and let'er fly. It'll work on anything light or heavy.

I know guys who like Tamiya flat base in Future. Some use MM dullcoat. Be gentle with this one over enamels though. Dust on the first couple of coats or else you could melt the base color.  There are others but I've not tried them. However, to my knowledge they are all either lacquer or acrylic so what would apply for one flavor of acryl or lacq should apply for the others also.

Hey there Bill,

I would go easy with a clear lacquer over an acrylic base coat. Use light mist coats and allow to dry before really hitting it.

Conversely, you can apply an acrylic clear coat over anything without affecting the underlying paint.
