gunze-sangyo or humbrol ?
Posted by rudedog on Sunday, April 9, 2006 5:38 PM
I've only been modeling about 3 years[a long hiatus from childhood],& have been using tamiya ,.model-master/testors & occasionally flo-quill. These are the only brands my LHS carries in stock..Before ordering some over a web store, what are the pros & cons of these 2 brands or are they about the same.& the old question, acryllic or enamel ?  Any help will be appreciated.   Semper fi,  rude dog

Personally I do 99% acrylics.  I use Vallejo, and Color of Eagles acrylics that are made by Vallejo and bottled under a different name.  I love them, and they are nicknamed "the enamels of acrylics" for a reason.  They brush well, leave no streaks or build up and stand up to masking quite well too... airbrushing is a charm as well.  MM acrylics are ok, I have about 10 bottles of them but I prefer the Vallejo any day!!  I chose acrylics because after switching to Vallejo I was able to airbrush without all the nasty thinners and cleaners stinking up the house and irritating my nose while getting quality results.

I don't know much about Gunze or Humbrol, although I have a tin or two of them hanging around that I never have gotten the chance to use.  I know quite a few overseas (UK, AU) who use both of them and judging by the photos of their builds they work great.

Good luck to you, and if you decide to go for acrylics ask away!  As I said I love them and prefer them for all types of painting except for drybrushing and NMF where I use enamels and Alclad II respectively...

Semper Fi!  (former Corpsman "Doc", two deployments with 2nd MarDiv, 24th MAU and 26th MEU) (the MAU thing dates me huh?  Wink [;)]))

I use Humbrol paints quite extensively for my models with acrylics every now and then. I find that the Humbrols go on very well with more coverage than the acrylics normaly. I also use the acrylics for some models as they are the 'more correct' colours for some of the schemes I do for the RAAF aircraft. One problem I find with acrylics is that you need to seal them before you mask with certain types of tape. I have used Selleys 'Sctoch Tape' on acyrlics and on removal of the tape it occasionaly takes some paint with it, this doesn't happen with Humbrol. I have now started using Tamiya tape and so far it hasn't stripped any paint.

The biggest problem with the Humbrol colours is the fumes, you need a paint booth or well ventilated area to air brush with them. Also using the face mask and gloves is a good thing. Acrylics also produce fumes but they aren't as bad for you as enamels.

I normaly use around 2 parts thinners to 3 parts paint and get good results for the Humbrol paints.

At the end of the day I much prefer Humbrol enamels as I know how well they work and the result I will get as I have used them for around 20+ years so far.

I use Gunze acrylics almost exclusively as the the colour range is excellent, ie full range of RLM, USAAF, RAF colours.

They spray perfectly thinned 50/50 with Tamiya Acrylic thinner, and you can overcoat with Future in less than an hour without any ill effects.

Acrylics are more delicate than enamels, but the lack of fumes is more than sufficient compensation in my experience.
