lone's right on the money... if you use acrylics let the wash almost dry (or even dry) before you wipe it up or there will be no highlight..

here's a good link to check out a pro's technique:

coat the model with future first(brushed or airbrushed and let dry for at least 24 hours, then apply the wash with a brush, you can use artist oils thinned with Turpeniod(my favorite) or use acrylics thinned with water and a few drops of dish detergent...wipe up the excess and you should be fine, just practice a little and it'll come to you

Noobie Backwash questions

Fellow Modelers:

I have a small ship that I want to bring out the detail on by using a dark backwash.  So I have a couple of basic questions regarding the technique.  I’m told that the backwash is thinned paint at a ratio of about 12 to 1.

Question one:  Is this backwash typically applied with a paintbrush or airbrush?

Question two:  Since I thinned the paint so much don’t I risk removing my base coat when I wipe off the backwash from the highlights/high areas?  Do I protect the base coat with some kind of clear coat before I apply a backwash and then proceed to wipe it off?

Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer.
