I need HELP!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 9:36 PM

I was thinking of getting a new airbrush because i dont like my aztec and i was sort of leaning towards the Badger Model 200NH. I was just wondering i anyone had any other suggestions or comments. My price range is about $100-$200 at the most. Thanks,

Gee, if you're willing to spend $100-200 for a Badger 200NH, buy it at Dixie Art and buy one for me too! Wink [;)]

I would suggest getting into a double action, rather than the single action of the 200 series. The 100 series is quite good (I have the siphon fed 150), the 100LG is very popular around these parts, heck for $200 you could buy a 200NH, a 150 Pro boxed set and a 100LG! The airbrushing version of the Trinity!

Dixie Art and www.bearair.com are two very reputable vendors, who will save you MONEY!

So long folks!

Had a Badger 200 for years. Good reliable airbrush. You can get 3 tip sizes and the airbrush will do most anything you want. If you are set on a Badger think about the 100LG. If you are not set on a Badger then I might suggest looking at an Iwata Ecylpse. All are good and all are in your price range.   Greg.

That's the way I felt coming into the hobby, I ended up buying a cheapie airbrush because I thought the new ones might be expensive for me just returning to the hobby...  Most airbrushes, even the high level of detail ability ones start about $45 and run up to about $109 at Dixieart.com.  That $200.00 limit was about $9 short of buying the very best brush Badger makes!  (The Sotar 20/20 runs $209.00 at dixieart)  I say you're good with either the Badger 100 or 200 as mentioned or the Iwata HP-CR or CS.  Read around a bit in here and see what different people have had to say about different brushes and then once you order your brush, go spend the rest of the money at the hobby shop on kits and paint!  Wink [;)]

I do own and use a Badger 200NH which amusingly was a replacement for my Aztec A430.  It's a really fine airbrush, and I found it to be a lot easier to use than the Aztek (not to mention it didn't break the way the Aztek did).  Being a single action version of  Badgers Anthem 155, it gives very good control.  My first project with it was a freehand camo on a 1/72 Tiger tank that came out quite nice.  As others have related, you won't have to spend anywhere near your budget on it.  DixieArt is a good place to shop and if you have any New Orleans/Katrina cleanup worries, I just ordered some stuff from them that arrived at my house five days after placeing the order.

For single action ease, the Paasche H is another fine airbrush.  I also have one of those, using it for clear overcoats and acrylic painting.  It's a bit less expensive than the Badger 200 and is a tad easier to use.  In spite of it being external mix vs. the Badger's more-or-less internal mix, I don't notice a lot of difference in their spraying capabilities.  If I could go back in time with the benefit of my 20-20 hindsight, I think I would have just started with the Paasche H Set and then if I ever found my skills and needs exceeding the Paasche H capabilities, I would upgrade to a Badger 100.

For some additional opinions and experiences on single action vs. double action, see this thread...

So...I'm not getting a new airbrush? Sad [:(]

Just kidding! Don't bank that $200 though, you'll need a new air hose, fittings, moisture trap, pressure regulator, a spray booth and that new kit you've always wanted. And that's if you're happy with your current air supply...

Hey Bgrigg if my air supply already has a moisture trap and a pressure regulator will i still need to buy those? Also where can i buy those adapors and airhoses at? As for the spray booth, my dad and i are working on cleaning out our garage, so once that happence i will get my own workbench and Ill probably make my own spray booth. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Dixieart has the airbrush sold with an airhose for like 10 dollars more.  If your compressor has a 1/4 inch fitting for the airbrush hoses (aztek uses that size for compressors), you pretty much won't need an adaptor.  I got my badger airbrush to Iwata hose adaptor off of ebay for 2 bucks or so and there were others available.

If you already have the regulator and moisture trap you would only need a 1/4NPT male to male connector to finish it off (if you already don't have one of those too)

Archangel said it right, when you order the brush, usually on the same page as the brush is a link to order a hose with it for usually around $10.00

What Ryan and Tom said. If you already have them you'll probably be able to convert them over. Dixieart has most of that stuff. Email them for their advice on what to get.

I made my spraybooth out of scraps of plywood and a kitchen hood, and one of those small tube fluoruescent lights you can buy at Home Depot for use in closets etc. Works well for me.

And you're welcome! Advice is free for those who take it. Smile [:)]
