No paint coming through???
Posted by NikToo on Friday, April 21, 2006 1:01 PM
I was happily spraying away today when in after a while there was no paint coming through. I took the airbrush apart, cleaned it, put back together. Same thing happened. It wouldn't even spray only isopropanol. Apart again, went through the whole thing with the interdental brush, found some hidden globs of paint, put it back together. Same thing. Banged Head [banghead]

Any ideas why? I'd thinned the paint 2:1 isopropanol and thinner to paint so it wasn't too thick. When it produce some paint it was speckled and flecked, is that because I have a cheap compressor?

How about a little more information?
What airbrush is it? What paint is it? What pressure are you spraying at?

Iwata CM-CP copy, using Vallejo Model Air, at <10 psi.

Tried using just water and a couple of drops of Future, and it seemed to come out better, almost flowing too much.

Nik - one thing that might be causing the problem is the alcohol... how long have you used that with Vallejo?  My experience with alcohol based thinners like Tamiya, and Vallejo paint is they tend to flocculate (thank you Ross for giving me that great sounding word haha) when thinned with it... They tend to clot a bit and look grainy while in the paint cup is what I mean.  Maybe this is what is happening?  The larger size of pigment particles coagulated together would make it easier to block the paint path...

Have you tried soaking the nozzle/head in lacquer thinner for a bit and try it?  In my experience any problem with paint flows I have had, have "usually" been fixed with a good cleaning... Especially on something with a small nozzle like the CM-C.

I'd try soaking it in lacquer thinner (just the nozzle and head), then using Vallejo only thinned with their brand thinner or distilled water and see what happens.

Let us know how that works!

How long have you used the CM copy ?  The nozzle is VERY small, a .23mm at best. You may need to thin the paint closer to 1 to 1 with thinner. You are also on the lower end of air pressure. Try upping it a little, maybe 15 lbs.You said it painted then slowed and stopped with some paint spatter. Sounds like the paint is too thick.   Greg

Thanks for the suggestions. I've just used the CM copy for about two weeks. It does sound like it's the isopropanol that's the culprit. One thing I noticed with isopropanol is that the paint goes right to the bottom and doesn't quite mix. With the water it seems to mix much smoother. I then added a drop or two of Future as that's what I do to improve flow when I paint 28 mm figures. Now it's a case of adjusting pressure and fiddling with the screws and dials on the airbrush.

Nik - the paint going straight to the bottom and not mixing is the "flocculation" I was talking about.  It's the same thing blood does when left alone for a sec in a test tube.  the particles of paint in this case start clumping together in tiny little groups... that's the alcohol doing its work.  I think you'll have great results with distilled water.  I really recommend picking up a bottle of the Vallejo thinner though as it has a bonding agent and retarder that really gets the paint on the body tight and helps prevent tape lift-up.  It's about $4.50 for a 30ml bottle but because you dispense it 1 drop to 3 drops of paint it lasts forever.  I use Vallejo exclusively and it takes about a yr for me to use a bottle of thinner usually.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks Tho. I have a bottle of Vallejo thinner, guess I have to play around with the mixing to see what works best.

As far as I know, Vallejo and the kind (Prince August, etc) are not intended to be used with alcohol, only specific thinner, water ( maybe acrylic medium as it makes sense ) with the exceptions of alcohol metallic tints, but I beleieve there are a few of them. But I might be wrong.

Thank you all for coming José
