Bought some Tamiya masking tape yesterday
Posted by MikeV on Sunday, April 23, 2006 12:38 AM
I bought some Tamiya masking tape at the LHS yesterday to see what everyone is talking about and I can see why now. It is great stuff! Thin, low tack and high quality. Thumbs Up [tup]

Does anyone know if you can you get it in Australia?

Best tape going in my opinion.  It is expensive, though, but well worth the cost.  As long as the edges are burnished properly I have never, ever had it leak paint.  It can also be left in place for a long while without leaving any adhesive residue behind.  I don't know exactly how long, but I have left in place for over 2 weeks with no problems.

Will, it should be available in Australia.  I can't see any reason that it wouldn't be.

Yes - definitely... Where abouts are you located in Aus? Many hobby shops here in Sydney have it.

How about 3M fine line tape? I have never used it but it is the mainstay in automotive painting.

I paid $6 for a roll of the 18mm wide stuff.
For what we pay for kits, resin parts and such, I don't consider that too much. Wink [;)]

Mike, chap, I'm becoming anxious; first step was Japanese paint, second step was Japanese masking tape; take care as next step could be swapping your Badgers for the whole Iwata range.

Thank you all for coming José

Mike - I haven't used the 3M stuff, but I got some Pactra fine line tape from the LHS, he sells it with the RC planes and cars to stripe them.  I've mainly used it to get in a tight spot but I did wield it in a fight wait a unruly curve once and I won..  Wink [;)]  I was even having trouble with the Tamiya because it was wider... I used the 1/8 stuff to mask, then the tamiya to fill out the mask line so I wouldn't get overspray.. I had to use the tamiya because even with the 1/8" tape there were some areas normal tape couldn't get..

I would think they are similar if not even the same... good stuff!

I'm in Sydney in the Sutherland Shire, and I have not seen it over this way. Would hobbyco in town stock it?

Tom,

I just put a piece of the tape on my cutting mat and with a steel ruler I cut strips with a sharp #11 blade.
That way you can have pieces 1/16" wide or less if need be.
I use the Scotch Blue painters tape this way also and that is what I used to mask the invasion stripes on the P-47D I am building.

Have you tried Vaggs Hobbies across from Miranda Westfield?

If not try www.frontlinehobbies.com.au in Newcastle. They have a great mail order service.

Hey MikeV, I get mine here, http://www.starshipmodeler.com/cfstore/index.cfm?currentpage=2&fuseaction=category.display&category_id=70 Even with shipping it was less than $6. At least I think so. I could be wrong. I bought a bunch of stuff at the same time. Anyways they've always been a pleasure to deal with and I've always got my stuff in a timely manner.

Edit: Actually since I am not doing anything at work I checked the shipping. $5 dollar minimum order. So 3 refill rolls + shipping is about $9. Not too bad. Especially if you go through it fast.

Cheers

As mentioned earlier, Vaggs Hobbies at Miranda (Cnr The Kinsway and Kiora Road) usually carry it (they have been selling the Tamiya tape for years), though they might not have all widths depending on when they last restocked.

All three widths are listed as "in stock" on Hobbyco's website, so I would presume that to be a "yes".

I've been using the Pactra tape for years now, and it has never failed me. I know there is something in the chemical composition that is the same in many of these low tack hobby masking tapes. They have a particular odor to them that is the same.

I use 1/8 up to 1/2 inch wide and usually have all the sizes on hand. Another thing is that you can leave it on the model for days and it comes off easily. I pay $4.65 for a 20' roll . Worth it.

I'm painting a B36 right now and the paint cost is going to kill me. I bet its $50 all told to paint this plane!

I'm one of those extremely slow builders and in the past I have left tamiya tape on a canopy for about a year between painting sessions with no problems at all.
