Third Airbrush - What should I get, gravity or siphon
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, May 8, 2006 3:22 PM

I've got an Iwata HP-B and the Eclipse CS. I use the HP for very fine work on figures and the CS for most other stuff. These are both gravity feed and I have the the small tip (.020) on the HP and medium (.035) tip on the Eclipse. This works out well since I can quickly pick a gun based on my need.

I've been wanting something to really slather on large amounts of paint onto stuff like 1/72 Revell uboats and FM Millennium Falcons and other large models.

Hobby Lobby has Revolutions on sale for 1/3 off this week. It's got a .050 tip and I can get either the gravity or the siphon model. I was thinking for big stuff it might be better to not have to fill the cup all the time and worry about spilling as I'm heaving larger models around to access the nooks and crannies.

Does anybody have mix of gravity and siphon airbrushes and how does this work out?

Thanks,

Andy

Actually, Iwata do a .5 mm replacement tip for the Eclipse, which I think has a pretty generous cup size to start with. Might be an idea to have a look before you spend money on a whole new brush. Otherwise I'd imagine a Badger 360 would be just the thing you're looking for.

Andy - I had two Badger siphon feds in addition to my Iwata and to be honest I never put the bottle on them... it was a pain to clean it up so I would usually fill the cup on my gravity fed.  That said something like that 1/72 U-boat might need more paint so the BCR might be a good deal for ya.. and at 1/3 off it would be the same price as ordering it from Dixieart.com... without the wait!  Wink [;)]  I know someone who uses the BCS and loves it so I would think it would be similar for the BCR.

The airbrush that puts out the most paint is the Badger Crescendo with the heavy tip.
Second would be the Badger Anthem. These both spray a fairly wide pattern and will do what you want.
That Revolution may work well also but I have not used one and can't comment.

Mike - I was always a little too nervous to put the heavy tip on the 175  Wink [;)]  .. I didn't know if my house insurance would cover flood damage if it occured on a clear day.

Well, I thought about the cleanup and bottles and siphon tops and decided to get the gravity feed version. I'll just shovel in more paint as I go.

Only problem is that the Iwata QD sold by Hobby Lobby is not the same QD as the Iwata QD's on my current airbrushes. Doesn't that figure?

QD?  what's that (okokok... it's probably something obvous but humor me Wink [;)])

ahhh quick disconnect!!!  I am glad I didn't hit enter... it's really not the same?  when ordering through dixieart the part numbers were the same for the CR and CS diconnects... in fact the same AB hose fits on both my Iwatas...

-=-edit-=-

is the QD at HL the Iwata branded one??  just curious...

To keep everything in the same basket, an eclipse BCS bottom-fed shares most of the parts with the CS you have and the default package comes with that larger nozzle/needle set up they rated at 0.5mm.  I currently have the BCS for large coverage and the HP-CH and BH for general and detail painting, plus a bunch of badgers.  I used to use my badger 155 anthemn for large areas and surely it did a good job, but after I got the BCS, it's since then been retired for primer duty only.  For something lower on price the revolution is perfectly fine for the job anyways.  For a job like the millenium falcon, a bottom feed brush with a large bottle probably will make your work a little easier than a gravity feed.
