Wish to buy a new airbrush-
Posted by CarnivourousDonut on Thursday, May 25, 2006 1:51 PM

willing to spend 100$ (I have the compressor)

What are my choices, or is this not enough money to get something good?

I currently have a Badger 350, which, while fine so far, doesn't produce (unless I'm way off base here and need some education) a small enough pattern. I use it for Armour, and the smallest spread I seem to be able to get is about 1/2"

Would like 1/16" or 1/32" if possible.

Let's rattle the cage, crack the machine. Let 'em know who you are, shine to be seen.

Check out Dixie Art:

http://www.dixieart.com/Badger100.html

The 100LG goes for $64.95 delivered. Add my $35 finders fee and there ya go! Tongue [:P]

Ah, I'm kidding about the finders fee. It's only $25!

Okay, okay, I'm kidding about that, even. Clown [:o)]

I think an Iwata Eclypse or a Badger 100LG would be good safe choices. Check out Dixie art supply before ordering.   Greg

I just tried the Iwata Eclipse over this past weekend & I was impressed with how fine a line it can lay down on a T-shirtBig Smile [:D] it was about a pencil line. I do not know about the Badger 100LG but, from what I've heard it is a sweet toy... I mean gun

I've heard good things about the Badger 100LG and seen some great work done with it.  With the medium tip and needle as well as the fine you should be able to do anything you ask for....

I own both the Iwata HP-CS and HP-CR and love both of them.  The CR would be more aimed toward 1/35 armor and 1/48 planes... the CS toward all of the above and 1/72 tight camo as in Luftwaffe mottle.  Do a search on any of these three brushes and see what people have to say about them and see if one might be what you are looking for...

Thank you all kindly for the information. Given that I tend to mix paints on the fly, and set aside multiple (or would like to anyway) pre-mixed paint jars, I'm not real crazy about the non-removable paint cups on these airbrushes.

If I go with this price range, am I only going to get that kind? Do I need to move up or down in price range to get an airbrush that uses removable paint jars underneath?

The you'll need to go to a siphon feed.

http://www.dixieart.com/Badger_Model_150_Illustration_Airbrush.html

This is the airbrush I have with the medium needle and tip. This is actually the 100 series but as siphon, and is an excellent all around airbrush. You might have to give up a bit on the fine lines as siphon fed brushes require more air pressure to move the paint. More air = less control, hence thicker lines.

Keeps you within the budget though!

CD - If I have colors that are custom mixed or will be used a lot on a particular kit I buy these little 1 or 2 ounche paint cups at Hobby Lobby and fill them with the respective colors.  Then as I need them I use a pipette to pull some out and put it in the bowl.  I thought the same thing about the gravity feed brushes at first but it really isn't a hassle.

And for 1/16th lines you'll almost definitely go with a gravity feed with a finer type needle/nozzle.  With some decent amount of practice you could do it with a siphon fed, but for me I'd rather be building and painting instead of going over a primered milk jug with an airbrush till I'm seeing spots!
