my hobbyshop just got a new "top of the line" airbrush i think for a price like that they would include a compressor, paint thinner and every thing else you need for airbrushing

$423 for an airbrush?
I can get an Iwata or a DeVillbiss gun (made for spraying cars and trucks) for less than $250, and that's not a bad price for these high quality spray guns.
As they say in the vernacular Down Under, someone needs to be told to "get their hand off it".
For that price, I'd expect it to paint the bloody models as well...............

Geez, duckman
You must shop at the same hobbyclipjoint as M1abramsRules. The place that wants $250.00 for an Aztek!
Are the airbrushes that are exported to Canada being shipped with platinum needles and tips?
They must come in a real nice box I bet.

What a bargain! Big Smile [:D]

Lee is right, you can buy the best spray guns in the world made by Sata for less than that. Wink [;)]

Maybe that is one of those 6-pack of airbrushes they sell for T-shirt artists. Big Smile [:D]

Not really. That would only be $70.65 each in Canadian funds which is cheap for an airbrush like an Eclipse.

ok ok, I've just gotten back on the forum after a few days in bed/couch with a fever. yes it was $250 for the aztek A4709. but remember that it is in canadian funds which converted would be $170 US. personally I don't think its the HS' fault, it must be the cost to get them exported up here. the LHS gets them (azteks) in small numbers I think. but he just got a huge order of paasche H's in and had a sale on them. I got mine for $69 cdn, converted.... $45 US. normally he would sell them for $80 cdn.

Wonder if it's an Iwata custom micron ? I believe
list is $550 US for one but you can get one for $275. That's
still a lot but they are a precision tool for professionals. They'll
spray a hairline width consistently.
M1's right the Aztec 4709 with video and accessories in the case lists for $169.95. I didn't know they cost that much.

I agree with Lee. For that price, you should be able to load your color of choice, walk away and come back to a perfect finish.
A couple of days ago, I saw an airbrush on eBay that went for over $700, but that one was made in 1882. That I can understand ...

P.S. Got to poking around on the Micro-Mark website - they have a gold plated airbrush on closeout (!) for $124.95. Exerpts from the the description -

Custom-made for us by the Badger Airbrush Company, the Micro-Mark Gold Edition Airbrush has a special, patented teflon seal that allows the color cup to be rotated a full 360 degrees. With a simple twist, you can configure it in either gravity or bottom feed mode -- giving you two airbrushes in one!
All components are carefully machined of high-quality materials, inspected, assembled by hand, and then tested to assure you of receiving an airbrush meeting the highest of standards. Set includes airbrush with gold-plated brass body and stainless-steel needle, protective nozzle cap, jar with 33mm siphon cap, 8 foot braided air hose with gold-plated fittings, velvet-lined case and instructions.

Thats more like it! Cool [8D]

That airbrush was bought by a friend of mine. He collects old airbrushes and this one was his greatest find yet.

Mike,

Most people I know think the airbrush is a recent development. Does your buddy have any on-line pics? I would LOVE to see his collection!!

P.S. Is he going to try to restore it and replace the hoses - get it working?

I don't know if he will be trying to get it to work or not, he hasn't said. Actually I know him through emails and not in person. Big Smile [:D]

Here are some photos he put on his website the other day:

http://www.topgun-airbrush.com/collection/

Another guy named Neil who also posts on the airbrush forum I go to has a collection also and posted this link the other day also:

http://www.homestead.com/getpainted2/miscellaneousitems.html

You are right, most people don't realize how old the airbrush actually is. The famous Alberto Vargas (My favorite painter) who was the inspiration behind all of the noseart that WWII pilots painted on their aircraft, used an airbrush in his paintings back in the 30's and 40's.

Sure Hoser.

Although it is a T-shirt and automotive airbrush forum you can get a few answers to basic questions on modeling airbrushes and equipment from some of the people there.

I never would have guessed that airbrushes date back to the 1800's! My guess would have been the early 1960's; maybe the 50's.

As I haven't read all the posts on this topic, I don't know whether the make and model of the airbrush in question were ever revealed. I do know that the Badger Sotar 20 / 20, esteemed by many as the best airbrush ever, retails for around $400. (If you want some detailed testimonials, as well as examples of work accomplished with it, take a look at Amazing Figure Modeler magazine, or the website, www.amazingmodeler.com.) The good news is that Micromark currently have them on sale for $145 - until mid-September, I believe.

By the way, doesn't f**k count as profanity? It would certainly be a disciplinary matter at my place of work.
