tamiya spray paint w/kilz primer
Posted by halfpint33 on Saturday, June 10, 2006 11:02 PM

Can I do it?I know you aren't supposed to mix enamel pimer and acylic paint, but I can't find anyplace on either the tamiya spray can or the kilz that states which they are.I know my tamiya bottle paints are acrylic,so I figure the spray cans are as well. But the kilz I'm totally clueless about.Any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary

I haven't used the spray cans of Kilz. But I have used the big brush on cans during construction work. I can honestly tell you, if the can stuff smells anything like the brush-on stuff... AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAQUE, the smell is so strong I thought I'd die before I finished painting the bathroom ceiling.

Actually Kilz has other chemicals in it that you don't need to mix on a model kit, unless you'll be playing with it in the bathtub often? It's meant for covering over tough stains and mildew that regular paint won't cover up even with multiple coats.

Take a walk down the spray paint isle of Wal*Mart, there's plenty of better options to chose from and all for under $5.00. There's even some in the automotive area too.

I think Krylon even has spray cans of acrylic paints.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] ... go get some krylon white and you'll be ok...  or some auto primer from the auto store...

And you can use enamel over acrylic or acrylic over enamel anytime...  you just have to give the first coat time to cure before shooting the other over it.  24 hours usually is good for acrylics unless it's humid out...

Another disadvantage of Kilz is that the pigment is rather coarse, and it has a high pigment load. Could obscure details if applied too heavily, especially in smaller scales.

Great adhesion and hide, though, and your models will never mildew or mold…Laugh [(-D]

Ross Martinek A little strangeness, now and then, is a good thing… Wink

No offense to anyone intended -I just thought I'd put this out there as well - Kilz is one of THE lowest quality cheaply made oil/solvent based primers you can buy for home improvement /hobbies/whatever needs priming. the reason it smells so horrible  is the  incredibly toxic ingredients  and antimold additives. if you  gotta oil prime. benjamin moore or equivilant quality primer will last almost twice as long and take top coats 3 times better - made for paint anti mold agent can be added later and with much less toxicity if the area to be primed is damp. good laquers excluded if the paint reaks and dries super fast stay away! stink = low enviromental regard by manufacture, low qaulity, and less brain cells for you - my two cents -J
