Clear (Dull) Coats
Posted by ridleusmc on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 5:02 AM

Hey Guys,

I've been having some trouble with my Dull Coats lately.  Citadel Colour's Matte Varnish in a Rattle Can has been giving me glossy results lately, even with brand new cans.  I have some Tamiya X-21 Flat Base and Tamiya X-22 Clear, but I can't remember if they need to be mixed.  I also have some Future to mix with a Dulling agent.  Does anyone know what mix ratio I should use for the X-21 Flat Base?  Should I spray it on the model, mix it with X-22 Clear, or mix it with future?

What do you guys use for consistent and dull Flat Coats?

Semper Fi,

Chris

General rule of thumb for mixing X-21 Flat Base seems to be 4 parts gloss (either X-22 Clear or Future) to 1 part Flat Base to give a "dead flat" finish.

Never use Flat Base on it's own - it's only purpose is as a "flattening agent" to be added to gloss paints to make them flat (or depending on how much you add, anywhere in between).

OK, thanks Phil,

I'll do some experimenting first.

I believe 10 parts future to 1 part X-21 gives a satin finish.

For an acrylic, I use *Delta Ceramacoat Eterior/ Interior Varnish.  It's avalibale at most Micheal's, and Bates art stores and you have your choice of Gloss, Satin or Matte.  It sells for approx. $7.00 per 8 oz. bottle.  For airbrushing, I thin with distilled water and spray it at approx. 15 psi.  You can use it over enamels or acrylics.  For the untimate in ease of use and simplicity, I use Testors Model Master Laquer clear finishes.  They are available in Flat Clear, Semi-Gloss, and Gloss Clear.  I thin them 2:1 with Laquer thinner and airbrush at 15 psi.  Either option has worked very well for me over the years, with excellent results.  Below is the Delta craft web site.  Good luck!

Semper Fi,

Chris, try using Pollyscale Clear Flatcoat.  It's an acrylic and probably the most consistent, dullest flat around.  I find it easy to use because you don't have to mix it with anything and can airbrush it straight from the bottle (although you can thin it with a little water).
